MKN,EV. EDWARD F. MURPHY,D.D., rector of St. Mary'sCathedral, Halifax, N.S.,was born September ist, 1844, nearCharleville, County of Cork, Ireland.His father was Thomas Murphy, andhis mother was Catherine Carroll.Father Murphy was educated at AllHallows College, Dublin, where hestudied philosophy, and at the SulpicianSeminary, Montreal, P.Q-, wherehe took his theological course. Hiseducational career was very bright, andgave promise of the distinction towhich he has since attained. He wasordained to the priesthood by ArchbishopConnolly, in St. Mary's Cathedral,Halifax, N.S., June 29th, 1867.He was then appointed a professor inSt. Mary's College, Halifax, of whichhe afterwards became president. Hehas been secretary to Archbishop Hannanand also to ArchbishopHe O'Brien.was appointed rector of St. Mary'sCathedral Halifax, in 1887, on thedeath of the late Mgr. Power, and wascreated Doctor of Divinity by Pope LeoX<strong>III</strong>.,on the occasion of the SilverJubilee of his ordination, on June29th, 1892. Father Murphy has wonthe respect and esteem of all whoknow him.
