75. FATHERJ. McDEViTT,M.A., Parish Priest, Sussex,N.B., was born in the Parishof Moncton, Westmoreland County,N.B., August 29th, 1848. He is theson of Jaines and Mary (Barr) McDevitt,natives of County Donegal, Ireland,who came to this country aboutthe year 1840, and settled first inSt. John, N.B., and after remainingthere for six years, removed to Moncton.Father McDevitt obtained his primaryeducation in the <strong>com</strong>mon schools ofMoncton, under the old system, attendingthem for five years. He enteredSt. Joseph College, Memranicook, N.B.,to prepare for his sacred calling, andstudied there for ten years. He wasordained August 2ist, 1875, and remainedat Memranicook for one year,attending to Moncton and Sackvilleparishes. He was then called to theCathedral of St. John, remaining therefor four years, after which, in October,1880, he was appointed to take chargeof the Industrial School, of Silver Falls,N.B., and the Golden Grove Church.In November 1892, he was appointedto the rectorship of Sussex, where heisdoing very successful service. Thedegree of M.A. was conferred uponhim June 2ist, 1888.
