were69JOHNCLARKE CARLOS DELEANO MCLEAN, L.D.S.,Montreal, P.Q., was born July4th, 1863. His parents. Lieut.Colonel George Clarke McLean, adiplomat, in Austria, at the presenttime, and Elizabeth Victoria d'Aosta.Mr. McLean received his education atMontreal McGill Model School, CollegiateSchool, under William Nicholl,a Commercial School, under WilliamTurner, and the Collegiate Institute,Cambridge. He entered the office ofGeorge W. Lovejoy, M.D., L.D.S.,April 1 3th, 1878, and finished thecourse in September, 1881, but beingonly eighteen years of age,the Board would not grantexamination. He remainedas assistant until August,1882, and in September ofthat year, went as assistantto Dr. Alfred Wright,whom withhe remained untilJanuary, 1883. He thenwent to Europe, and spentseven months travellingthrough various Europeancities, after which he devotedthree months to the BritishIsles, and returned to Americain February, 1884. Hewas identified with severaloperatic and concert <strong>com</strong>panies,notably Wagner FestivalConcerts, and returnedto Montreal in 1885, againtaking an engagement withDr. Lovejoy. He enteredthe University of Bishop'sCollege (medical department)as partial student,and graduated before theProvincial Board of Examinersthe following May.Being ordered by his physicianto give up practice, orchange climate, he went toWaterloo, P.Q., a small town, where,with plenty of out door exercise, healthwas restored. He returned to Montrealin 1892, and formed a partnership withDr. Dixon, and is now the successor ofthe firm of Dixon & McLean. Mr.McLean belongs to the Brotherhood ofSt. Andrew, and is the director of St.Paul's Chapter. In politics,he is anIndependent, and in religion, an Episcopalian.He was choir director of St.Luke's for four years, and lay reader inthe neighboring parish of Knowlton.He was married, Sept. 22nd, 1886, toAlice Gertrude Bucke, of London, Eng.He has two sons and one daughter.
