GRAY, M.A., re-CANADA. 45.JAMES 1887. At first his field of labor wastired Presbyterian clergyman, very extensive, covering an area of_ Sussex, N.B., was born at about 50 square miles, and when he retiredhe left all the congregations,Longside, Aberdeenshire, Scotland,February i9th, 1818. He is the son churches and manses, without a dollarof John Gray and Elizabeth (Ramsay) of debt on them. Mr. Gray was moderatorof the Synod of New Brunswick,Gray. He received only a limited educationat the parish schools, which he when it united with the Synod of Novaleft at eleven years of age to work on afarm, which occupation he followed forseven or eight years. He then obtaineda situation in Peterhead, and attendedevening school and studied in his leisurehours, and thus prepared himself forentering the Grammar School, andMarischal College, Aberdeen, where hetook a full course, and graduatedM.A. He then enteredthe Theological Hall,at Aberdeen, and studiedunder professors McLagan,Bryce, Davidson and Longmuir,for three years, anda fourth year in Edinburgh,under Dr. Cunningham,and others. He thenreturned to Aberdeen, andtaught in an Academy.He was licensed by thePresbytery of Aberdeen, in1851, and continued teachingand preaching, as occasiondemanded until 1856,when, at the solicitationof the Colonial Committeeof the Free Church, hecame to New Brunswick,and was sent to Sussex, andsurrounding stations, witha view of getting families togetherand organizing congregations.Receiving aunanimous call, he settled inSussex, and was the meansof getting three churchesbuilt in different districts.He remained in Sussexthirty one years, retiring inScotia, in 1866. He was married, in1852, to Margaret, daughter of JamesLigertwood, builder, of Aberdeen, whodied February 23rd, 1888; he was marriedagain in November 5th, 1889, toJane, daughter of William McAuley, ofKing's County, N.B., by whom he hastwo daughters.
