MBN,EV. JOHN SANDERS SUTH-ERLAND, B.A., Presbyterianminister, Sussex, N.B. wasborn July 29th, 1866, at Little Harbor,N.S. He is the son of Rev. John AlexanderFraser Sutherland, now ministerof Selkirk, Manitoba, and of BessieArundel (Sanders) Sutherland ;theformer of whom was born in NewGlasgow, N.S., and the latter in theUnited States. His grandfather wasone of the early settlers in New Glasgow.When quite young Mr. Sutherlandwent with his parents to NewZealand, where his father was settledin the town of Ross. After remainingtwo years, they returnedto Nova Scotia, and hisfather was stationed at St.Croix, Hants County, whereour subject attended school.He subsequently attendedthe Halifax High School,and matriculated into DalhousieCollege, in 1883.Here he won a GeorgeMunro Bursary of $150 ayear, for two years, and hada very successful collegecourse. At the end of hissecond year, he won prizesin English literature, logicand psychology and alsothe New Shakespeare Society'sprize. He then hadto abandon study for oneyear, on account of illhealth. At the beginningof his third year in arts, hewon the 2nd Munro Exhibitionof $200 a year fortwo years, and after prosecutingspecial studies inEnglish literature and history,graduated B. A. in1888, with first rank honors,and the Governor-General'sSilver Medal. The followingsummer, he obtained an academylicense in Nova Scotia, and taught forsome time, when, realizing his call tothe ministry, he took a theologicalcourse in the Presbyterian College,Halifax, and graduated in 1892, beingvaledictorian of his class. He was one ofthe promoters and editors of the collegepaper, and when at Dalhousie, was aneditor of the Dalhousie Gazette. Duringvacation he was engaged in missionwork in Pictou and Halifax Presbyteries.He was licensed by the latterpresbytery May 5th, 1892. On receivinga call from Sussex, was ordainedand inducted there June 28th, 1892.
