466 M.ENPetrolia, Ont,OWEN HERRING,Editor and Prop-5) rietor of the Petrolia Advertiser,was born at Maranichnrch, Cornwall,Eng., April 27th, 1846. Hisparents were Richard and Matilda(Herring) Herring. The father, whowas a leading barrister of London, Eng.,died when Richard was a child. In1852 Mrs. Herring came out to Canadawith her son, and settled in Seaforth,Ont. She was a woman of beautifulcharacter and passed to her reward,December 4th, 1891, in her 86th year.At Seaforth, young Herring received a<strong>com</strong>mon school education, and at fifteenentered the office of theStratford Examiner, thenpublished by the late T.M. Daly, M. P. P., from1862 to 1865 he was on theStratford Beacon staff, afterwhich he was manager of theHuron Signal for a shorttime. Mr. Herring thenfounded at Goderich, theConservative journal, 77ieCanadian Colonist, now theGoderich Star. At the endof one year, feeling his lackof a thorough education,Mr. Herring went to collegeyears. On theoutbreak of the " oil excitement,"he went to OilSprings, and in 1867 removedto Petrolia, where hefounded the Advertiser, theonly Canadian oil journal,which he has continued toedit with great ability andsuccess, having made it therecognized organ of the oilindustry in Canada. Mr.a staunch Con-Herring isservative in politics, and wasalways a great admirer andstrong supporter of his latelamented chieftain, Sir John A. Macdonald,from whom he has receivedmany confidential autographHe letters.takes a deep interest in whatevertends to the development of the oilindustry, and the prosperity of Petroliain general, and his well directed effortsin these particulars are appreciated bythe people. In religion, he is an Episcopalianhe is also a member of the;A.F. & A.M. On June 6th, 1877, Mr.Herring was married to Miss EmmaWhite, daughter of Colonel White,of Lapier, Michigan, U.S. Three sonshave been born to them, but all diedin infancy.
