,EV. LEVI STEVENS JOHN-SON, Methodist Clergyman,_ Newcastle, N. B., was bornat Head of Tatamagouche Bay> ColchesterCounty, N. S., May 25th, 1842.He is the son of George Johnson andMary Stevens, and has three sisters andseven brothers, two of whom are ministersin the Nova Scotia Conference, andone a physician in Bangor, N. Y. Mr.Johnson received his early education atthe public schools, near the home of hisboyhood, and then successfully passedthrough the Provincial Normal School,at St. John, N.B. After obtaining hislicense, he taught school for severalyears, and then further prosecutedhis studies for aboutthree years at Mount AllisonUniversity. In 1868,he offered as a candidate forthe Methodist ministry, andduring his four years ofprobation, was stationed atGuysboro, Granville Ferry,and Weymouth, N.S. Hewas ordained in 1872, atHalifax, the Rev. Dr. Punshondelivering the ordinationcharge that year. Hisfirst circuit, after ordination,was Alberton, P.E.I., wherehe remained the full termof three years, as he hasdone on all subsequent appointments.Leaving Alberton,he went to the Welsford,Queens County, N.B.,circuit, and thence to Nashwaak,York County, andthen to Albert, Albert County,then to Milltown, CharlotteCounty, then St. Andrew's,Charlotte County,then Baie Verte, WestmorelandCounty, and from thereto his present charge atNewcastle. Mr. Johnsonwas first married on November 4th,1872, to Sarah Jane, daughter of SamuelPickup, Esq., of Granville Ferry, AnnapolisCounty, N.S., by whom he hadfour sons and two daughters. He wasmarried the second time on October12th, 1892, to Susan A., daughterAmos ofF. Lawrence, Esq., of Southampton,Cumberland County, N.S. He isa member of the Independent Order ofForesters, A. O. U. W., S. of T., andI. O. G. T. While in St. Andrews, hewas chairman of St. Stephen District,and is at present chairman of the MirarnichiDistrict of the New Brunswickand Prince Edward Island Conference.
