428 ORALLAN RITCHIE, MillOwner and Lumberman, Newcastle,N.B., was born nearPaisley, Scotland, January ist, 1848.He is the son of David Ritchie andMary Young, both of Renfrewshire,Scotland, who came to New Brunswickwhen Mr. Ritchie was about four yearsof age. He received his early educationat the public schools of Restigouche,and Campbellton High School,and <strong>com</strong>pleted his studies at Chatham,N.B. In 1865, he entered his brother'slumber business as clerk, be<strong>com</strong>inga partner three years later. Theyhave very extensive mills at Newcastle,and large lumbering interests onthe Miramichi, and also carry on anextensive business in dry goods andgroceries. Mr. Ritchie was a memberof the Legislative Council of NewBrunswick, until its abolition. He wasmarried, in 1884, to S. E., daughter ofRichard Hocken, Esq., of Chatham,N.B. His family consists of three sons.He is a member of the Masonic Orderand Highland Society. In religion, hebelongs to the Church of England. Inhis business are employed between 300and 400 men, and in 1893, the ship"Ruby " made four round trips betweenGreat Britain and the Miramichi.
