JAMESSTEWARTNEILL, Wholesaleand Retail Hardwaremerchant, Fredericton,York County, N.B., wasborn in that city, Octoberi4th, 1849. He is the sonof John Neill and JaneMcPherson, the former beinga native of Ayrshire,Scotland. Mr. Neil receivedhis education at theprivate academies of Fredericton,first, under Mr.Denton, and then at theCollegiate School, underProf. Roberts and Dr. Coster,and after completinghis studies, engaged as clerkin the hardware business ofhis father, which was establishedin 1848, and in 1870,he bought out the business,which he has since conductedwith increasing success.He does the largesthardware and house furnishingbusiness in Fredericton,and has had a numberof large contracts, amongwhich may be mentioned,the pipes for the water systemin Fredericton, New Brunswick,which amounted to 700 tons of pipe,which he imported from the well-knownfirm of D. Y. Stewart & Co., Glasgow,Scotland, his tender for the pipe beingthe lowest. Mr. Neill is a member ofIVEKN OF* 425he is amember of the Presbyterian Church,and holds the office of trustee. Mr.Neill has been married twice :first, in1870, to Eliza Davis, daughter of JohnBarrett, Esq., of Fredericton, by whomhe has one son and one daughter, andCurling Club. In religion,St. Andrew's Society, has been presidentof the same for two years, also second, inpresident of the Board of Trade, ofwhich he was one of the originators.He was also one of the delegates toOttawa, in 1885, in the matter of theCanada Eastern Railway, of which heis at present a director. He also belongsto the I.O.O.F., Knights of Pythias,and ispresident of the Fredericton1879, to Mary Todd, daughterof Chas. E. Hill, Esq., by whom hehas f :.ur sons and one daughter. Heis an enthusiastic sportsman, and spendsseveral weeks every year in shootingand fishing. In politics, he is a Liberal-Conservative,and has done goodwork for his party in election campaigns.He stands high in the public estimation.
