During hisresidence in Minnesota, from 1853 to1870, Mr. Taylor had taken part in theexciting life of a frontiersman, also anactive part in politics. It had been apart of his official duties to have dealingspeople of the Red River,in whom he became much interested.He had, early in the sixties, visited thatcountry, and delighted to detail the incidentsof his interesting visit to thethen little known banks of the RedIn 1870, he was appointed, byPresident Grant, Consul ofthe United States, residentHis life wasat Winnipeg.very even and uneventful,chiefly devoted to socialduties, and he made himselfvery popular with all whoknew him. He was also intenselyinterested in thework of the Historical Society,and was so great an authorityon the North- West,that he was known as " SaskatchewanTaylor." In religion,he was a Presbyterian,though broad enoughin his views to be interestedin all denominations. Hewas married to Miss ChloeLangford, and at the timeof his death, had a familyof two daughters. He died,April 28th, 1893, deeply regretted,as his life was anembodiment of geniality andkindness. Although not aCanadian citizen, he had sogreat a love for Manitoba,that this interest and hislong residence here justifyus in claiming him amongCanadian public men.
