34 OF-M.HARRINGTONELLIS, of the Colonist,Victoria, B. C., wasborn in Port Hope, Ont.,October 3ist, 1859. He receivedhis education in thepublic schools and by privatestudy. At eleven yearsof age, he was apprenticed tothe printing trade, with thelate J. B. Trayes, proprietorof the Times, Port Hope,where he remained untilAugust 1878, when he removedto Rochester, N. Y.In 1879 ne returned toOntario, and located in Toronto,and in the same yearremoved to Montreal, andin March, 1882, located inWinnipeg, where he wasmanager of a printing business,and afterwards of thenews room of the Free Press.In the Spring of 1883, hewas induced to go to thePacific Coast. A few monthsafter his arrival in Victoria,he became manager of theColonist practical departments,under Hon. D. W.Higgins, then proprietor.In 1884 he was associated with Mr.Higgins in the literary department, inthe production of a four-page-sevencolumndaily. In May, 1886, he resignedthis position, and entered thereal estate business in Vancouver. InOctober of that year, Mr. Higgins,having been elected to the ProvincialParliament, Mr. Ellis and two others,purchased the Colonist, which up toSeptember, 1892, was published byEllis & Co., the general managementbeing under the direction of Mr. Ellis.This paper (Conservative) has advancedfrom a four page, seven columnto an eight page, seven column, and isto-day, the organ of the Dominion andProvincial Governments, and creditedwith being one of the best edited newspapersin Canada. The Colonist hasalso lithograph, job and label departments,and employs about 60 hands.In religion, Mr. Ellis is a <strong>com</strong>municantof the Episcopal Church, memberof the A.F. & A.M., A.O.U.W., ManchesterUnity, I.O.O.F., and memberof Council and Arbitration Board ofTrade. He was married to Miss AdaLeslie Withrow. eldest daughter ofDavid Withrow, Esq., formerly of St.John, N.B., but now of British Columbia.His family consists of three sons.
