RUTHER-FORD COCHRANE,B.A., Professor ofMathematics in Wesley College,Winnipeg, was bornAugust Qth, 1850, in theTownship of Sullivan, GreyCounty, Ont. His parents,James and Susanna (Rutherford)Cochrane, emigratedfrom the North of Irelandabout 1830. Mr. JamesCochrane was a fine type ofthe sturdy, honest Canadianpioneer. His house was thehome of the early travellingMethodist minister, and formany years served as theplace of Sabbath worship.When the<strong>com</strong>munity decidedto establish a <strong>com</strong>monschool, the building waserected on his farm, twoacres on the corner of whichwere donated by him forthat purpose. He died in1879, deeply regretted, havingsurvived his estimablewife nearly twenty years.His eldest son, George,isnow the well-known Rev.Dr. Cochrane, the pioneerMethodist missionary in Japan. Thetraining afforded by the <strong>com</strong>mon schoolon his father's farm, supplemented bydiligent home study, enabled our subjectto qualify as a school teacher in1866. Three years spent in teachingin Sullivan, furnished him with suffi-graduating in ,1885, taking first-classhonors in Mathematics and Physics.In 1886, he was appointed Principal ofPerth Collegiate Institute, which heheld until September, 1888, when hereceived his present appointment. Prof.Cochrane is a born teacher and disciplinarianhe loves hiscient means to continue his studies for; subject. Hebelongsto the A.F. & A.M., the A.O.U.a term at Rockwood Academy, and forthe next four years, he taught school W., and has been for some years ainWellington County. In 1875, he member of the Advisory Board of Educationfor Manitoba. He is a Liberalattended the Normal School at Ottawa,obtaining a first-class grade " A " certificate,after which he taught school in Methodist Church. On April 6th, 1891,in politics, and an adherent of theOttawa for six years. In 1879, he he was married to Miss Eva Rosettamatriculated into Toronto University, Reilly, of Wiltshire, Eng.391
