IVEKN OR 377ylEUT.-COL. CHARLES MUS-I GRAVE BOSWELL, A.D.C.,^VWinnipeg, Commanding gothRifles of Canada, was born in Cobourg,Ont., July loth, 1849. He is the youngestson of the late Lieut-Col. JohnCrease Bos well, and grandson of thelate Admiral the Hon. Walter Boswell,R.N. He was educated at the CobourgGrammar School, and Upper CanadaCollege, Toronto, and received his militaryinstruction under Lieut.-Col. Lowryof the 47th, Lieut.-Col. Jennings ofthe 13th Hussars, and Capt. Penn, of theRoyal Artillery. Col. Boswell was onactive service for six months during theFenian Raid, saw stern service in theNorth-West Rebellion of 1885, asMajor of the goth Rifles, and wasspecially mentioned in despatches byMajor General Middleton, he also sawaction in 1866 Fenian Raid. On the<strong>com</strong>mand of the goth be<strong>com</strong>ing vacant,he was appointed Lieut. -Colonel, andshortly afterwards A. D. C. to the Governor-Generalof Canada, for Manitoba.He has been in the Civil service forfifteen years. In politics, the Colonelis a staunch Conservative, and in religion,a member of the Church of England.In 1874, he married Emily, eldestdaughter of John Lasher, of Bath, Ont.
