NATHANIEL BO YD,C*X"| M.P., Dealer in high gradeV> horses, cattle, sheep, etc.,Carberry, Man., was born July gth,1853, in the County of Argenteuil, P.Q.His parents,Hugh and Maria (Kilfoyle)Boyd, are natives of Ireland, and arenow living retired at Carberry. Theformer has held a lieutenant's <strong>com</strong>missionsince, 1837. After <strong>com</strong>pleting hiscourse in the <strong>com</strong>mon schools of OxfordCounty, Leeds and Grenville, Mr. Boydcontinued his studies at the Grammar,School, Ottawa. Subsequently, forsome four or five years, he engaged inrailroad contracting with his father,then, for a similar period,devoted his attention to telegraphy,and was for someyears employed in the Houseof Commons. At this time,he was considered one ofthe best operators in theDominion. He then wentback to railway contractingwith his father, for aboutthree years, on portions ofwhat now constitutes theC.P.R. system. He thenremoved to Manitoba, andwas employed by the DominionGovernment, for twoyears, as chief train despatcherand assistant superintendentof Section 15, ofthe C. P. R., in Manitoba.He afterwards organized thewholesale and retail businessof Boyd and Crow, whichwas the largest in Winnipegfor years. Their millswere situated at Rat Portageand on Lake Winnipeg.Mr. Boyd started the ranchingbusiness in 1886, butdid not dispose of his lumberinterests until 1888.His ranch <strong>com</strong>prises sometwenty-three thousand acres, and hemanages his extensive stock raising andfarming operations, in person. Mr.Boyd is of a retiring disposition, andhas many times refused the honor ofpublic office. He, however, was inducedto oppose the Hon. Robert Watson, in1891, and through a technicality, failedto secure the seat, but on the resignationof Mr. Watson, was elected by acclamationin 1892, to represent the Countyof Marquette, in the House of Commons.He was married, June i2th,1878, to Miss Eliza Jane, daughter ofFrancis Abbott, of Ottawa, Ont. Hehas one son and one daughter, living.
