His fatherwas Robert Machray, advocate,Aberdeen. ArchbishopMachray was educated chieflyat Coull, Aberdeenshire,and King's College, Aberdeen,graduating M. A. fromthe latter in 1851, winningthe Simpson and Huttonprizes, and in the same year,entered Sidney-Sussex College,Cambridge, electedFoundation scholar, 1851 ;Taylor scholar, 185 2 ; graduatingin 1855, when he waselected a Fellow of the College,which he still is. Hereceived the degree of M.A.(Cambridge) 1858, D. D.1865, LL. D. (Aberdeen)1865, Hon. D.D. (Durham)1888, and D.C.L. (Trinity)1893. He was ordaineddeacon in 1855, and priestthe following year. While at Cambridge,he was very active in churchand university work, and was vicarof Madingley ;in 1858, he was appointeddean of Sidney-Sussex College;1860-61, was University examiner;1865, Ramsden Universitypreacher in ; 1888, special preacher. In1865, he was consecrated second LordBishop of Rupert's Land, his diocesecontaining some two millions squaremiles, from which seven dioceses havesince been taken. His first care wasto revive St. John's College, and hehas spared neither time, labor nor ex-trideal,in which he still lectures inmathematics and ecclesiastical history.Education, and chancellor of the Universityof Manitoba since its foundation.To-day, his own diocese is in apense to build up that college to his355He was appointed by the Queen, prelateof the most distinguished Order of St.Michael and St. George, 1851, and designatedArchbishop of Rupert's Land,and elected Primate of all Canada, atthe General Synod, 1893. He has beenchairman of the Provincial Board ofremarkable state of efficiency, having atthe centre a capitular body, with a deanand four residentiary canons, all ofwhom are professors in the college.
