CANADA. 345H. HARTNEY, M.P.P.,General Merchant, etc., Souris,JAMES Man., was born September22nd, 1848, at Arnprior, Ont. Hisparents were James and Elizabeth Hartney.He received his education at thePakenham High School, after which hewent into business with James M. Robertson,in 1870, at Pakenham, wherehe remained five years. He then workedfor his father, at Arnprior, for fouryears, then in partnership with GeorgeWilson, in Arnprior, for three years.He removed to Manitoba, in 1882, andfor six years farmed where Hartneynow stands. He then went to Souris,and in 1890, bought the store of W. H.Hall & Co. In the Fall of that year,he opened the store at Hartney, andthe Post Office there was opened in1885, with Mr. Hartney as postmaster.In religion, he is a Presbyterian, andin politics, a Conservative. He waselected Reeve, in 1891, of the municipalityof Glenwood, and M.P.P. in 1892,to represent the new constituency ofAvondale. Mr. Hartney was marriedtwice: first, Aug. loth, 1870, to SarahJane, daughter of Wm. Cowan, of Pakenham,who died in 1877, and second,to Annie Evans Cuthbert, of Pakenham.He has six children.
