He is theeldest son of James Aikins,who cauie from CountyMouaghan, Ireland, toPhiladelphia, in 1816, wherehe resided until 1820, whenhe removed to TorontoTownship. Mr. Aikins waseducated at Cobourg Academy.In 1854, he waselected to Parliament for theCounty of Peel, which herepresenteduntil the electionof 1 86 1, when he wasdefeated. In 1862, he waselected for theHome Divisionto the Legislative Councilof Canada until theUnion, when he was calledto the Senate. He becameSecretary of State in 1869,in the administration of SirJohn Macdonald, and retiredwith his chief in 1873. In1878, he was again appointedSecretary of State, andheld that office until 1880,when he was appointed Minister of InlandRevenue, retiring in 1882, whenhe was appointed Governor of Manitobaand Keewatin, which position he helduntil July, 1888. He is president ofthe Manitoba and North-West LoanCo., and of the Trusts Corporation ofOntario, and officially connected withseveral monetary institutions. He isa warm adherent of the MethodistChurch, lay treasurer of the MissionarySociety, a strong supporter of the temperancecause, and takes an active interestin whatever tends to the advancementof religion and morality. Mr.Aikins was married, in 1845, to Mary,only daughter of John Somerset, Esq.His family consists of three sons andfour daughters. The eldest son, J. S.Aikins, is a broker in Winnipeg, thesecond son, J. A. M. Aikins, Q.C., alsoresides in Winnipeg, the third son, Dr.W. H. B. Aikins, is a graduate of TorontoSchool of Medicine, a member ofthe University Senate and is a residentof Toronto. The eldest daughter marriedRev. D. G. Sutherland, M. A.,LL.B., D.D., an eminent and scholarlyman the second;daughter married Dr.J. E. Graham, M.R.C.P., London, Eng.,and the two younger daughters areunmarried and live with their parents.
