3 2 5S^TNOBT.ADAMSON,|\^ manager of the Com-VS> mercial Bank ofManitoba, Virden, Man.,was born January i3th,1852, at Stanochy, Forfarshire,Scotland. His parentswere David H. and Maria(Torrance) Adamson, bothnatives of Scotland. After<strong>com</strong>pleting his course in theHigh School, Mr. Adamsonwas articled to the late Win.Shires, solicitor of Breachen,with whom he remained forabout five years. He thencame to America, and wasengaged as cashier forMessrs. Ogilvie & Co., ofToronto, Ont., from 1872 to1877. From 1877 to 1880,he occupied a similar positionwith Mr. W. R. Brock,of the same city. He thenremoved to Manitoba andcarried on a private bankingbusiness in Winnipegfor one year. In 1888,he established a privatebank in Virden, and whenthe Commercial Bank wasstarted in that town, he wasappointed manager in November, 1890. retain the confidence and business ofMr. Adamson was the first mayor of the public, wherever he is known. InVirden, occupying that office during 1876,the years 1890, '91 and '92. He his parents and the rest of thewas family came to this country and settledalso the first president of the Board in North Ontario County, Ont., andof Trade for the township of Dennis, subsequently removed to Winnipeg,and is still in that responsable position, Man., where his father died in May,which he fills ably and to the entire 1889. In religion, Mr. Adamson issatisfaction of the business <strong>com</strong>munity. a Presbyterian, and in politics, a supporterof the Conservative party. HeHe was also the first man to establisha bank in Manitoba, west of Winnipeg.is also a P. M. in the Masonic Order.Mr. Adamson is one of Virden's most He was married, June 2ist, 1882, torepresentative men, and has done Miss Effie, daughter of the late AlexanderCaldwell, of Lanark, Ont., bymuch to stimulate the progress of thecountry of his adoption.
