REDBRICK HERVEY JOHNBRIGSTOCKE, D.D., Archdea-Rev. S. J. Jerram. In 1866, he wasoffered the curacy of Ewelme, Oxfordshire,by Rev. Canon Payne Smith,con of the Diocese of Fredericton,Rector of Trinity Church, St. John, D.D., which offer he accepted, and remainedthere five years, until Septem-N.B., was born at Walwyn's Castle,Pembrokeshire, Wales, May, 1841. His ber, 1871, when he removed to Newcastleon Tyne, to take charge of theparents were the Rev. Thomas andCaroline W. Brigstocke. He received Parish of St. John. Here he laboredhis early education at home, after which two years, when he was unanimouslyhe became a graduate and exhibitioner elected to his present position, whichof Jesus College, Oxford, B.A. in 1862. heHe entered upon in 1873. In 1876, hewas ordained deacon in 1864, and was appointed by the Bishop, Honorarypriest in 1865, by the Bishop of Winchester.His first two years in the Cathedral, Fredericton. InCanon and Trustee of Christ Churchministry were 1883, hespent at Chobham, Surrey,where he worked as curate to the American Church, as a delegate fromattended the General Convention of thethe Provincial Synod ofCanada. In 1888, he was27chosen by the bishop to actas his <strong>com</strong>missary, duringhis absence of severalmonths from the diocese.From 1885 to 1889, he waschaplain of St. George'sSociety, St. John. He receivedthe appointment ofAtArchdeacon, June, 1893.present, he is Rural Deanof the Deanery of St. John,one of the governors ofKing's College, Windsor ;agovernor of theMale WigginsOrphan Institution, amember of Madras Board,vice-president of the DiocesanChurch Society, andvice-president of the Societyfor the Prevention of Crueltyto Animals. In 1889, thedegree of D.D. was conferredon him by King's College,Windsor. During his longpastorate in St. John, manychanges have taken place,the greatest being the lossby fire, in 1877, of thechurch erected by the Loyalistsin 1791.
