MKN 321^REDBRICK WM. STOBART,-I Wholesale Dry Goods Merchant,and president of the Board ofby the cityTrade, Winnipeg, was born January2yth, 1859, in Roker, Durham County,Eng. His parents, William and January loth,Sophy(Wylde) Stobart, are both living andreside in Yorkshire, Eng. The Stobartsand the Wyldes, for generations back,have been typical English country gentlemen,Mr. Stobart, sr., being at presentthe managing-director of a largemining (coal and iron) corporation, andalso on the directorate of several othersuch <strong>com</strong>panies. Mr. Stobart was educatedat Wellington College and JesusCollege, Cambridge, Eng.,after which he came to Canada,in 1880, to look afterhis father's interests in thefirm of Stobart, Eden & Co.,formerly Kew, Stobart &Co., fur traders, establishedin 1874 in opposition to theHudson's Bay Company, byhis eldest brother. Mr.Stobart, soon after <strong>com</strong>ingto Manitoba, began to takean active interest in theWinnipeg Board of Trade,was soon elected to its council,and in February, 1893,to preside over its deliberations.It is needless to sayhe is deservedly held in universalesteem, both as acitizen and as a progressiveand honorable businessman, and is admirably qualifiedto assist in openingup a new country. He hasalso for years been a directorof the Winnipeg GeneralHospital, in which institutionhe takes a great interest.He steadily refusesmunicipal or political office,but accepted appointmentcouncil on the first Boardof Park Commissioners of Winnipeg, aposition he now holds. In religion,Mr. Stobart is an Episcopalian. On1885, he was married toMargaret, youngest daughter of thelate C. J. Brydges, who was for so manysuch cor-the In-years a prominent figure inporations as the Grand Trunk,tercolonial, the Great Western railways,and the Hudson's Bay Company, beingfor several years general manager ofthe former, and subsequently for someyears Land Commissioner of the latter.His family consists of three daughtersand one son.
