CHIPMAN,Judge of the CountyCourt for DistrictNo. 4, Nova Scotia, <strong>com</strong>prisingthe counties of Colchester,Hants and Kings,was born March 3ist, 1848,at Pleasant Valley, Townshipof Cornwallis, KingsCounty, N. S. His parentswere Rev. William and ElizaChipman, the former beinga Baptist clergyman, whowas greatly respected, andfor years was both ministerand lawyer for the membersof his church and adherents,and the latter was a mostestimable Christian woman,and a daughter of the lateHolmes Chipman. JudgeChipman was educated atthe schools of Kentville,Horton Academy and AcadiaCollege, Wolfville, andobtained the degree of LL.B.at the Law School, HarvardUniversity, in June,1869. He was admitted tothe Bar in October, 1869,and entered into partnershipwith T. W. Harris, Q. C.,M:KNwith whom he studied law, and which Scotia, Kentville. He is a member ofpartnership existed until the death of the Masons, Oddfellows, Foresters,Mr. Harris in 1876, after which he Royal Arcanum, a P. M. of Kentvillepracticed alone until February, 1880, Lodge in the former, and P.D.D.G.M.and then formed a partnership with R. of Grand Lodge. He was first StipendiaryMagistrate and Recorder forL. Borden, Q.C., which was dissolvedin December, 1883, when he entered Town theof Kentville, and subsequentlywith Edmund L. New-mayor for two years. In politics, JudgeChipman was a Liberal-Conservative,and in religion, a Baptist. He wasmarried, June loth, 1875, to SusanMary, daughter of Robert and MargaretBrown, of Halifax. He has had aShaffner, until i8th of June, 1890,when he received his present appointment.For about one year, he performed three sons and two daughters, nowfamily of seven children, five of whom,the duties of agent of Bank o' Nova survive.into partnership<strong>com</strong>be, now Deputy Minister of Justice.This partnership lasted until ist ofJanuary, 1886, after which he formeda partnership with Mr. Willard P.
