296 OR]VflVEN AGNEW, M.D, Winni-^J> ^ peg, Manitoba, was born inEdinburgh, Scotland, in the year1828. His father was John Agnew, andhis mother, whose maiden name wasHume Tnrnbull, was a descendant ofthe historic Sir John Turnbull, whoseheroic intervention between his Kingand an infuriated bull gave rise to thesurname and his knighthood. Mr.John Agnew came to Canada in 1833,and settled in Ontario County, wherefor years he followed farming, andlatterly insurance business. Dr.was educated at Victoria College, Cobourg,and McGill University, Montreal,from which former institutionhe graduated in1858. For a time duringhis college course, Dr. Agnewwas a private pupil ofthe late Prof. Rolph, of Toronto,Ont. On graduatinghe located in Prince Albert,Ont., where he remaineduntil 1872, when he removedto Toronto to practice.He was afterwardsassociated some years withthe famous eye and eardoctors, Roseburgh andReeve, of Toronto. He afterwardsremoved to Manitoba,and settled at Winnipeg,where he is now givingspecial attention to the diseasesof the eye, ear andthroat, in which he is verysuccessful. He was a coronerin Ontario, fifteenyears.Is a Liberal in politics,and a Presbyterian inreligion. He has been anelder in Knox Church, Toronto,and in Knox Church,Winnipeg, Man., and a delegateto the Synod and tothe General Assembly. HeAgnewbelongs to the A. F. & A. M., andI.O.O.F., in which orders he has takenan active official part. In 1863, Dr.Agnew was married to Miss Jane Sonierville,daughter of the late Geo. Ross,Esq., Railway Contractor, of London,Ont. She died in 1875, leaving foursons and three daughters, namely:JohnH., barrister, Virden, Man.; Win. L-,cashier of the St. Paul Trust Co., U.S.;Harry, a banker in Colorado Fred; R.,Winnipeg ; Maggie L., teacher, Winnipeg; Helena, now Mrs. Lethbridge, ofLethbridge, Alberta; and Mary, at home.Dr. Agnew is a distant relative of thelate Sir Andrew Agnew, of Scotland.
