274 OKMcCOLL, Inspectorof Indian Agencies and Reservesin the Manitoba Snperintendency,was born August I3th, 1835,in Elgin County, Out. His fatherSamuel McColl, was a lieutenant inthe British Militia, and his motherMary Leitch, was born in North Knapdale,Scotland. His paternal ancestorssprang from three branches of theMcColl Clan, viz : of the houses ofAuchadhnandarroch (Oakfield), GlenUachdrach (Upper Valley) and Glen-Creren. His father's paternal ancestorswere chieftains of the Clan,and owned the beautiful estate ofAuchadhnandarroch, including Benbheir,or the Mountain of the FlyingSerpent. His father's maternal grandfather,Samuel McColl of the House ofGlen-Crereu, was ensign by hereditaryright at the fatal and disastrous battleof Colloden, in 1745, to Mac-ian-Stuart,the proprietor of the Appian estate andchieftain of the Clan. Mr. McColl receivedhis education in the publicschools, Fort Edward Institute, NewYork, and the Michigan University, atAnn Arbor. He is a member of theOld School or Primitive Baptists, andin politics, he is a Liberal. In 1877,he was appointed Inspector of IndianAgencies, and shortly afterwards,a <strong>com</strong>missioner toaudit and apportion accounts,in dispute betweenthe Federal and ProvincialGovernments. In 1878, hewas made a <strong>com</strong>missionerto investigate allegedirregularitiesin the administrationof Indian Affairs inthe Manitoba Superintendency.In 1879, he was appointedpurveyor of all Indiansupplies for the Manitobaand North-West Superintendencies.In 1883,he received the position ofsuperintendent of the ManitobaSuperintendency, andin 1885, became a <strong>com</strong>missionerto investigate allegedclaims by others than Indians,to certain lands withinthe reserve of St. Peters.During his sixteen years inthe Civil Service, he hastravelled chiefly by canoe.In 1879, he married MissElla, daughter of Elder Win.L. Beebe, of Middletown,N. Y. He has two sons andfive daughters.
