252 MEN\\/M. BEATTY, M.A., LL.B.,T ^ general merchant, Parry Sound,Ont.. was born in Ireland in 1835, andcame to Canada with his parents in thesame year. He was educated at VictoriaUniversity, where he took thedegree of B.A. in 1860, M.A. in 1863,and LL.B. in 1864. In 1865, he waselected to the Board and Senate of VictoriaUniversity, continuing a memberminionby re-election for about twenty-fiveyears. In 1863, Mr. Beatty became aParliamentary candidate for Welland,in the Reform interest. In 1867, heran for Welland in the ProvincialLegislature, and for Algoma in the Do-Parliament, and waselected for Weiland by alarge majority. In 1863, inassociation with his brother,J. H. Beatty, of Sarnia, andhis father, Mr. Beatty, purchasedthe Parry Soundestate, and subsequentlyacquired their interest bypurchase, thus be<strong>com</strong>ingthe sole owner of the estate.The development of thislarge and importantinterest,<strong>com</strong>mercially, sociallyand morally, has in agreat measure constitutedhis life work. Parry Soundwas founded by him, andfrom a small beginning hasnow grown to a town ofmore than 2,000 inhabitants,with large lumbering andshipping interests, and prospectsof a valuable railwayconnection now rapidly approaching<strong>com</strong>pletion. Mr.Beattyis a Methodist inreligion, and while devotedto his church, is alwaysready to help forward thework of any other denomination.He has been amember of every General Conferenceof the Methodist Church of Canada,since the first union, and of every AnnualConference since the introductionof laymen. He has always taken adeep interest in the cause of temperanceand prohibition, inserting a prohibitoryclause in all his deeds of town propertyfrom himself. Mr. Beatty has alsobeen largely instrumental in bringingParry Sound under local prohibition.In 1873, he was married to Isabel Eliza,daughter of the late J. G. Bowes, Esq.,for many years mayor of Toronto. Hisfamily consists of four daughters andone sou.
