MEN OF251JOHN McINTYRK,Indian Agent, FortWilliam, Ont, wasborn in 1818, in Lochgoilhead,Argyleshire, Scotland.His parents were Nichol.and Violet (Campbell) Mclntyre.He was educatedat the village of Glenorchy,and afterwards at Glasgow,Scotland. Mr. Mclntyrehas been brought up withthe Hudson's Bay Co., coiningto this country, in 1841,with Sir George Simpson'sparty, on his trip aroundthe world, crossing the continentsof America, Asiaand Europe, in nineteenmonths and twenty-six days,a truly wonderful performancein those days.After this trip, in the Springof 1844, ne took charge of apost on the St. LawrenceRiver, thence to BrunswickHouse, North of Lake Superior,then to Fort William,Lake Superior, where heremained in charge fortwenty-four years, retiringas factor. He then enteredthe Civil Service, as Indian Agent, incharge of the Savanne Agency (Manitobajurisdiction). He has had a longand intimate acquaintance with thecountry and the Indians from MooseFactory, Hudson's Bay, to the St. LawrenceRiver. He has acted as Magistratesince 1866, and has also receivedvarious <strong>com</strong>missions, from time to time,from the government, in the interestsof law and order, and has served asCouncillor in his municipality. Inpolitics, Mr. Mclntyre is a Conservative,and in religion, a Presbyterian.Concerning his retirement from theHudson's Bay Co., Harper s Magazine''remarks : The chief glory of FortWilliam has, however, passed away inthe retirement of Mr. Mclntyre, thelast of the local factors, who looked likean old Scotch laird with his ruddy face,shaggy eye brows and a white tasseledcap that covered locks as whiteas the northern snows, among whichhe has spent his life." He renderedmost valuable service in instructingthe troops how to go West during thefirst Riel Rebellion. Mr. Mclntyre wasmarried, in 1849, to Jane Stone, ofBristol, England, who died in 1886,and by whom he has two sons andthree daughters, living.
