In 1878, hestarted the Inter-Ocean, atSelkirk, Man., this beingthe first paper in the North-West, outside of Winnipeg.In 1880, this plant was removedto Rat Portage, andthe Progress, now the News,was established. After sixteenmonths, he acceptedthe office of Registrar ofDeeds for Manitoba, butwhen the territory wasgiven over to Ontario, helost the office. In 1885,he started the Progress atQu'Appelle, Assa., and in1891, sold the same to Mr.A. C. Paterson, and returnedto Rat Portage, inJuly, 1891, and establishedthe Record, which is fastpushing to the front. Mr.Weidman is one of theablest and most pushingnewspaper men in the Dominionof Canada, and possessesthat keen insightand enterprise which are sohelpful in opening up theresources of a new country,and judging fromWEIDMAN, hiseditor andpastsuccesses, it is quite safe to predictproprietorJAMES of the Record, Rat for him a brilliant future. In politics,he is an Independent-Conservative,Portage, Ont., was born September12th, 1850, in the township of and in religion,Pickering, Ontario County, Ont. Hea Methodist, and issuperintendent of the Sabbath School,received his education in the publicschools, and he is practically a selfmademan. He subsequently servedan apprenticeship to the printing trade,on the York Herald, at Richmond Hill,Out., where he originated the process ofprinting several colors at one impression,on a hand press. He remainedon this paper six years, and afterwardsworked at different places, and establishedthe Brampton Progress, now thein his town. He is also a strong prohibitionist,and a past D.D.G.M., in theMasonic Order. Mr. Weidman hasbeen married twice: first, in 1873, toHattie Oriel, daughter of John Adair,of Toronto, Ont., by whom he has oneson and one daughter, and second, iniSSi, to Elile Jane, daughter ofCharles Bamforth, of Manitou, Manitoba,by whom he also has one son andone daughter.
