228 CANADA..JOHN SHAW,Parish Priestof New Glasgow, N.S., wasborn in December, 1828, inCape Breton, N.S. He is the son ofMichael and Christie (Morrison) Shaw,natives of the Highlands, Scotland.His father died when he was about sixmonths old, and his mother afterwardsmarried Archibald McEachern. FatherShaw's mother was Presbyterian up tothe time of her second marriage, whenshe became a Roman Catholic. Hereceived his education at St. FrancoisXavier College, Antigonish, N. S.,and was ordained priest in September,1 86 1, by the late Right Rev. BishopMcKinnon. His first charge was Ingonishand Bay St. Lawrence, VictoriaCounty, C.B. In 1866, he took chargeof Little Glace Bay, Bridgeport, CowBay and Reserve Mines, C.B., and continuedpastor of the same until July,1 88 1, when he was appointed to theParish of Arisaig and Malignant Brook,where he continued until September,1885, when he was sent to the newmission of New Glasgow and Trenton,N.S., where he still continues. Hisbusylife contains the fullest evidenceof his untiring efforts in behalf of hisbeloved church, and the affection of hispeople, speaks for his success.
