CANADA. 209THOMAS w. PETERS,LL.D., Barrister-at-Law, St. John, N.B., wasborn in 1848, in St. John,N.B. He is the son ofThomas W. Peters and MaryMcMonagle, of U.E. Loyaliststock. He received hiseducation at the schools ofSt. John, after which he enteredthe Cambridge LawSchool, from which institutionhe graduated, andengaged in the practice ofhis profession in his nativecity. He is also prominentin municipal affairs, andwas elected councillor forWellington ward, St. John,in April, 1882, and so continueduntil 1884, when hewas elected alderman forthe same ward, which officehe held until 1891, when'hewas elected mayor of thecity, and has since heldthis position with muchsatisfaction to all. His Worshipfills the chair of ChiefMagistrate with much creditto himself and the city. In1886 he was elected wardenof the Municipal Council, and in 1887 newas re-elected, and again occupied theposition in 1890. He has also beenchairman of the Finance and TreasuryBoard, and member and chairman ofthe Committee of Legislation. Alsopresident of the Exhibition Association,since 1892, and a member of the Boardof School Trustees since 1888. Hisexperience in public matters gives hima ready grasp of all business <strong>com</strong>ingbefore him, and enables him to actwith ability and despatch. MayorPeters belongs to the Masonic fraternity,the I.O.O.F. and Knights of Pythias.He is senior warden in the MasonicOrder, and representative of theGrand Lodge in the I.O.O F-, and isalso chairman of the Board of IndustrialHome for Boys and holds offices inseveral of the athletic and city clubs.In politics, he is an influential Liberal-Conservative,and has always beenidentified prominently with this party,taking an active part in elections.Mr. Peters' family have always beenmembers of the Church of England.Mr. Peters was married in 1880, toJennie Sullivan, who died in 1882, in1885, he was married to ^nfonetta,daughter of John Rogers. His familyconsists of one daughter.14
