CANADA.*^^[HE HONORABLE THOMASA GREENWAY, Premier of Manitoba,was born March 25th, 1838, inCornwall, England. He is the eldestson of the late Thomas Greenway.His parents came to Canada in 1844,and settled in the Township of Darlington,Durham County, Ont, where Mr.Greenway attended school. In 1848,they removed to Huron County, wherehe continued his education. He lefthome when thirteen years of age, andafter living some years in London, Ont.and in the Western States, returned tothe County of Huron, and becameestablished in mercantile business, nearExeter. He was ten years reeve of theTownship of Stephen, and was a memberof the House of Commons, forSouth Huron, representing the Liberalparty, from 1875 to 1878. In 1878,he went to Manitoba, and was elected tothe Legislature of that province, December,1879, and in 1888, he was electedPremier. He is an adherent of theMethodist Church, and a man of greatforce of character. Premier Greenwayhas been married twice, first, in January,1860, to Miss Annie Hicks, whodied in May, 1875, and again in 1877,to Miss Emma Essery. His familyconsists of eight sons and six daughters.
