171JAMESCHARLES Mc-DEVITT, Fredericton, N.B.,was born in the city of St.John, N.B., May nth, 1823. He is theson of Geo. McDevitt and Rose McMonenomy,natives of the North of Ireland.Father McDevitt received his primaryeducation at the schools of St. John,and his classical and theological trainingat Wilmington, Delaware, andPhiladelphia, U.S.A., graduating withhonors, but being too young for ordination,he entered the Grand Seminary,Quebec. In 1847, the Y ear of the shipfever, he was asked to go to the QuarantineStation at Grosse Isle, manyof the priests having died, and a largenumber being laid up with the fever.He consented to go, and was ordainedpriest, and immediately started for theQuarantine Station, and after nursingthere for some time, was stricken downwith the disease, and had to be removedto the Hotel-Dieu Hospital, Quebec,where he was ill with the fever forthirteen weeks. When convalescent,he removed to Fredericton, and stayedwith the bishop, and has had charge ofthe parish since that time, with the exceptionof a short term at St. Andrew's.His missions extend over thirty miles,and are prospering under his ministry.
