169~4 TON. SENATOR JOHN NEScrMBITT KIRCHHOFFER, BarvS>rister, Solicitor, etc., Brandon,Manitoba, was born August 5th,1848, at Ballyvourney Rectory, CountyCork, Ireland. His parents were Rev.Richard B. and Isabella (Fairtough)Kirchhoffer. On his father's side,Senator Kirchhoffer is descended froma line of celebrated clergymen, andmany of his mother's ancestors weremilitary people. He was educated atMarlborough College, England, and<strong>com</strong>ing to America in September 1864,settled in Port Hope, Ontario, where hestudied law with his uncle, NesbittKirchhoffer, Q. C., until1871, when he was called tothe Bar. He then formed apartnership with his uncle,which lasted three years,and in 1874, he began privatepractice in Millbrook,Ont. He founded the PlumCreek Settlement in Manitoba,and in 1882, settledthere. He was Reeve ofGlenwood municipality forsome years, and founded thewell-known town of Souris.He was elected member forthe Western Judicial Districtof Manitoba, was chairmanin 1885, and in 1886,was elected M.P.P. for WestBrandon. He removed toBrandon in 1886, and wasappointed manager for theManitoba Branch of the ImperialLoan Company ofToronto, which he conductsin addition to his generalpractice. He was appointeda senator, by the ConservativeGovernment, in 1882.Senator Kirchhoffer has alwaysbeen an enthusiasticathlete. He is a memberof the Canadian Cricket Association,and on two occasions has captained theCanadian teams against the UnitedStates, in international games. He wasmarried, first, to Miss Ada, daughter ofthe late Dr. Win. Smith, and niece of thelate Hon. Sydney Smith, of Cobourg,Ont., on June i5th, 1871 she died in;1874; and he was again married toMiss Clara, eldest daughter of the lateRev. J. B. Howard, of Guelph, Ont.His family consists of two daughters,living. The present Mrs. Kirchhoffer,is well and widely known in literarycircles, and has contributed to many ofthe leading periodicals and magazines.
