159/CHARLES EDWARD CHURCH,( M.P.P. & M.E.C., Commissioner^^-^> of Public Works and Minesfor Nova Scotia, Halifax, N.S., wasborn January 3rd, 1835, at TancookIsland, Lunenburg County, N.S. Hisparents were Charles L. A. and Sarah(Hiltz) Church, natives of Nova Scotia,"but of English and German descent,respectively. His grandfather was LotChurch, who represented LunenburgCounty in the House of Assembly, between1820 and 1830. Mr. Church waseducated in the schools of Chester andTruro. After teaching school for aboutten years, he followed mercantile life.In politics, he is a Liberal, and hasbeen actively engaged in the welfareof his party for the past twenty years.In 1872, he was elected to the House ofCommons, to represent LunenburgCounty, which he continued to do until1878. In 1882, he was appointed ProvincialSecretary, on the formation ofthe Liberal Government, of whichHon. W. T. Pipes, was Premier, andheld that office until 1884, when on thereconstruction of the Government hewas appointed to his present position.He was married, June 24th, 1884,* toHenrietta A. Pugsley, of Halifax. Inhe is a Protestant.religion,
