He is the third son of the lateWilliam Shortt, tea merchant, of thatMr. Shortt received his educationcity.at the Armagh Royal School, and TrinityCollege, Dublin. He has been inthe insurance business for twentyfiveyears in Canada, <strong>com</strong>mencing withthe Imperial Fire, in Montreal, in 1867.He is the general agent for Nova Scotia,of the London and Lancashire andUnited Fire Insurance <strong>com</strong>panies, Norwichand London Accident InsuranceAssociation, and agent at Halifax forthe Standard Life Assurance Companyof Edinburgh, and has been connectedwith the latter for over 20 years. Hislong experience in insurance matters,has made him one of the best informedmen in that business, and his well-knownsuccess is the result of his knowledge,application and energy. In politics, heis an Independent Liberal-Conservative.In religion, he is a member of theChurch of England. Mr. Shortt wasmarried, Sept. 2Oth, 1882, to Louise,youngest daughter of the late Hon. J.W. Johnstone, Judge in Equity of theProvince of Nova Scotia. His familyconsists of two sons.
