OF-JOHNMcKELLAR, Mayor ofFort William, Out., was bornin Middlesex County, Ont.,in 1835. His father Captain DuncanMcKellar, and his mother MargaretBrodie, were both natives of Scotland.The family removed to Ontonagon,Michigan, in 1855, then to Fort William,Ont., in 1863. Since then, Mr.McKellar and his brothers, Peter andDonald, have been engaged extensivelyin exploring the north shore ofLake Superior, making, between them,many first and important mineraldiscoveries. They discovered in 1865,the Enterprise Mine, lead and copper ;in 1866, the Thunder BaySilver Mine, resulting in ^^^^mstarting silver mining onLake Superior ;in 1868, theof councillor, deputy reeve and reeve inthe municipalities of Shuniah and Neebing,until 1892, when he was elected byacclamation, mayor of Fort William,and again in 1893, he was re-elected.He is considered one of the best postedmen in the district, and being yet in thezenith of his manhood and enterprise,gives promise of much future good tohis country, by his experience in locatingvaluable mineral deposits, and otherwiseopening up the vast resources ofthe West. In religion, he is a Presbyterian,and in politics, a Reformer, andpresident of the Reform Association ofAlgoma. He is unmarried.Thunder Cape Soapstone ;in 1869, the great barytalode, McKellar Island ;in1871, the Huronian GoldMine, first free gold foundon Lake Superior; in 1877,four to ten feet wide, nickeliferouspyrrhotite, JackfishBay; in 1880, the ZenithMine, great zinc deposits, Nipigon;in 1884, the celebratedAtikokan Iron Range,for quality and quantity,equally as good as thegreat American Iron Mines.These are but a few of themany discoveries made bythem, which discoveries resultedin awakening greatpublic interest, and in thesale of large quantities ofgovernment lands in thedistrict. Mr. McKellar wasa member of the first MunicipalCouncil (Shuniah) inThunder Bay, in 1873, andhas been continuously in theCouncil, filling the positions
