MEN OKLEX. HOWARD MACKAY,B. A., B. Sc., LL. D., F. S. Sc.(London), F. R. S. C., Superintendentof Education for the Provinceof Nova Scotia, was born May I9th,1848, at North Dalhousie, Pictou Co.,N. S. Mr. MacKay began teaching in1865. He graduated from the ProvincialNormal School in 1866, from thePictou Academy in 1868, from theUniversity of Dalhousie in 1873, andfrom the Halifax University in 1880.He was Principal of Annapolis Academyin 1873, of Pictou Academy from 1873to 1889, and of Halifax Academy from1889 to 1891. He was an editor of theDalhousie College Gazettefrom 1870 to 1873, and ofthe EducationalReview from1887 to 1891. He was presidentof the ProvincialEducational Association in1874 and 1876, and firstpresident of the SummerSchool of Science for theAtlantic Provinces of Canada,organized in 1887.Elected Com. Biological Section,British Association in1884 life Fellow; Society ofScience, Letters and Art ofLondon, 1886; and Fellowof the Royal Society of Canadain 1888. He is amember of the AmericanOrnithological Union, theVolapukaklub Nolumelopik,Ent. Soc. of Ontario,and Natural History Societyof Montreal and Ottawa,&c.,&c. Corresponding Secretaryof the Nova ScotiaInstitute of Science, DominionSecretary of the BotanicalClub of Canada, adirector of the VictoriaSchool of Art and Design,a director of the HalifaxLadies' College, and a governor of theUniversity of Dalhousie. He held theappointment of lecturer in Zoology atDalhousie, and in Bacteriology in theHalifax Medical College in 1891. In1892, the degree of LL-D. was conferredupon him b}^ the University ofDalhousie, and in 1893, he was appointedone of the honorary vicepresidentsof the World's EducationalCongress at Chicago. In religion,he is a Presbyterian, being an elder andmember of Senate of the PresbyterianCollege at Halifax. In 1882, he marriedMaude Augusta Johnstone, daughter ofDr George Moir Johnstone, of Pictou.
