13 6 r. THEOPHILUS VAN DEMOORTEL, Belledune, GloucesterCounty, N. B., wasborn at Bruges, Belgium, May iQth,1843. Father Van de Moortel beganhis early education at Boulers, WestFlanders, continued it at Turnhout,graduated when sixteen years of age,and secured his philosophical trainingat St. Louis University, Missouri,U.S.A. He then taught rhetoric in thesame institution for five years, and duringthat time was teacher of GeneralTecumseh, Sherman's son, the son ofGeneral Price, and many other notedmen. He took his theological course atthe College of the Sacred Heart, Woodstock,Maryland, under Father Mazella.He then spent several years in missionsin different parts of the United States,and was ordained in 1875, by ArchbishopBailey, at Baltimore, at the WoodstockCollege was then;appointed lecturer atthe Church of St. Francis Xavier, St.Louis, Mo., and then at the Church ofthe Holy Family, at Chicago. He thenremoved to Canada for the benefit of hishealth, and was appointed pastor of theParish of Gaspe, P.Q. Eleven yearsafter, he took charge of the Church of St.John the Evangelist, at Belledune, andof St. Vincent de Paul, at Green Point.
