135JOHN PRINGLE YOUNG, superintendentand burser of theProvincial Home for Incurables,Portage La Prairie, Manitoba,was born April 8th, 1845,i*1 Roxboroughshire,Scotland. His parents, Williamand Margaret (Pringle) Young,were also Scotch. Mr. Young beganhis education in the public school inScotland, and continued it in the publicschool in Canada, until he was fourteenyears of age. He then served his apprenticeshipwith Mr. James Steel,blacksmith, of Walpole, Out. He wassubsequently thirteen years at Chatham,Out., and eleven years in PortageLa Prairie. He received his presentposition in May, 1890. Mr. Youngwas in the Town Council for a numberof years, and was mayor of PortageLa Prairie in 1885-86-88. Inreligion, he is a Presbyterian, and inpolitics, a Reformer. He is also amember of the A.F. & A.M. and I.O.O.K. In the latter order, he was thesecond in Manitoba, to receive a veteranjewel for twenty-five years consecutivemembership in good standing.Mr. Young was married, February1 7th, 1869, to Miss Helen, daughterof Alexander Richardson, Esq., ofChatham, Ont.
