FREDERICK LESLIE NEW-MAN, of the firm of T. A. Newman& Bro., grocers, and Mayorof Portage La Prairie, Manitoba, wasborn June 25th, 1859, at Merrickville,Ont. His parents were Thomas andSarah (Maitland) Newman. The formerwas born in England and the latterin Canada. Mr. Newman was educatedin the Merrickville public school,Perth Collegiate Institute, BrantfordCollegiate Institute and Toronto University.He then taught school forabout three and a half years, and removedto Manitoba in 1882. He wassubsequently clerk on the C.P.R., andafterwards train conductor on the Pacificdivision. He was passenger trainconductor for about four years, and in1889 retired from the road, and wentinto partnership with his brother atPortage La Prairie, where they continueto do a large and constantly increasingtrade. Mr. Newman was elected mayorby acclamation in January, 1892, andagain in January, 1893. In politics,he is a Conservative, and in religion,an Episcopalian. He is a prominentmember of the Masonic Order, being aP.GJ.W. and a P.D.D.G.M. On Sept.8th, 1888, he married Emma L., daughterof S. B. Merrill, of Prescott, Ont.
