W TON. ARCHIBALDcrM W. McLELAN,V late Lieutenant-Governor of Nova Scotia,was born December 24th,1824, at Londonderry, N.S.His father was Gloud WilsonMcLelan, and hismother Martha (Spencer)McLelan. The former wasa member of the Nova ScotiaAssembly, representingLondonderry and Colchester,from 1836 to 1858, anddied in 1858. Mr. McLelanwas educated at Londonderryand Mount AllisonWesleyan Academy, atSackville, N. B. Duringhis early life, he was a merchantfor several years, andlatterly became particularlyinterested in ship building.Mr. McLelan was a memberof the Provincial Assembly,for the County of Colchesterfrom 1858 to 1863, forNorthern Colchester from1863 to 1867, and for Colchesterin the House ofCommons from 1867 to June2ist, 1869, when he enteredthe Senate, at which time he was appointedone of the <strong>com</strong>missioners for held until his appointment as Lieut-Postmaster General, which office hethe construction of the Intercolonial enant- Governor of Nova Scotia, in 1888.Railway. He remained in the Senate He was taken ill at the Governmentuntil 1881, when he resigned and returnedto the Commons ordered by hisHouse, Halifax, anduntil 1888.During the illness of Hon. physician to go to the Southern StatesJ. C. Pope, for his health. He did so, arriving atin 1882, Mr. McLelan discharged his Thomasville, Ga., February 6th, 1889.duties in the House of Commons, He returned from Georgia June i5th,and at the next General Elections 1890, and died at the Governmenttook the office of Marine and Fisheries,which he held until the retireligion,he was a Presbyterian. He wasHouse, June 26th of that year. In rementof Hon. Sir S. L. Tilley, in 1885, married May 24th, 1854, to Miss Caroline,fifthwhen he became Minister of Finance.daughter of the late JohnIn 1887, on the return of Hon. Sir Metzler, of Halifax. His family consistedof three Charles Tupper, he took the office of children.
