WELCOME FROM THE CHAIRJanet O’Neil, ETS-LindgrenChair, EMC <strong>2007</strong> Symposium CommitteeSpecial <strong>2007</strong> IEEE EMC Symposium Section 3ALOHA!On behalf of the EMC <strong>2007</strong> <strong>symposium</strong>steering committee, we hope you will joinus in Honolulu, Hawai’i, this July for the<strong>2007</strong> IEEE International Symposium onElectromagnetic Compatibility. The EMCSociety Board of Directors approved thisunique location years ago, as a special locationwas deemed necessary for a very specialcelebration: the 50th Anniversary ofthe formation of the EMC Society! The location of Hawai’i also reflects thisyear’s <strong>symposium</strong> theme of “East Meets West”as engineers from around the world will comefrom the East and the West to convene in themid-Pacific for a week devoted to the study ofEMC science. We’ve found the location toindeed be a central meeting point as the demographicsof our technical paper authors isapproximately 30% from Asia, 31% from theU.S. and 39% from Europe and the MiddleEast. This appears to be the first time we’ve seensuch a balanced representation of <strong>symposium</strong>authors from around the world. That’s exciting! Our record number of technical papers, workshops, and tutorials submitted promisea record attendance. We are sure everyonewill benefit from this increased attendance;there will be many great technicalsessions to attend, and many potential customersin the exhibit hall. Surely the networkingwill be great in Hawai’i!With the anniversary this year, theschedule for the <strong>symposium</strong> week wasaltered slightly. The workshops and tutorialswill be held on Sunday and Monday. The technical papers and the exhibits willoccur in the traditional Tuesday throughThursday timeframe. On Friday, we willconclude the <strong>symposium</strong> with the “official”50th Anniversary Celebration luncheonand island tour. After all, one can’tcome to Hawai’i and spend the entire timein the big city of Honolulu. One needs tosee the “real” Hawai’i of long ago, the endlessfields of sugar cane and pineapples, thestunning sun-bleached beaches, and theincredibly lush landscape. For one day, youare invited to join the 50th AnniversaryCommittee for a special luncheon and tour. You can read more about this in the followingpages. We are also launching the Global EMCUniversity at the <strong>symposium</strong> this year. This dedicated track is targeted to thosepeople who are relatively new to EMC andincludes a well-planned curriculum taughtby world-renowned EMC experts.Nowhere else can one receive this level ofEMC education from instructors all overthe world in one place at one time. If youare new to EMC, this track is for you! Please register early if this interests you, asattendance is limited to ensure interactionwith the instructors. CEUs are awarded tocandidates who successfully complete thecourse. In closing, I would like to thank theentire EMC <strong>2007</strong> steering committee fortheir excellent work on this <strong>symposium</strong>.Their names and areas of work on the committeeare shown below. I tallied up theexperience of this committee and was humbledwhen I realized we have on the committeefive past EMC <strong>symposium</strong> chairs, five IEEE Fellows, four past-Presidents ofthe EMC Society, and several current EMCSociety Board members. Every member ofthe committee has been involved in pastEMC symposia or has organized regionalevents. Our committee members thus arenot only experienced, but they are frommany different countries and regions withinthe IEEE. I would be remiss if I did notalso recognize and thank the TechnicalCommittees of the EMC Society for theirsupport of the <strong>symposium</strong>. This dedicatedgroup reviewed close to 400 papers!Collectively, the members of the EMC<strong>2007</strong> steering committee and theTechnical Committees have brought theirtime and talent to this <strong>symposium</strong>. Youwill reap the rewards of their dedication inHonolulu, Hawai’i, over July 8-13, <strong>2007</strong>.We hope to see you there.Mahalo!EMC <strong>2007</strong> SYMPOSIUM COMMITTEEVice ChairR.
