InfantsThe Infants Department extends a warm welcome to all our new students and their families. Both Kindergarten classeshave settled in remarkably well and are already happily engaged in learning class routines and getting to know eachother and have even started reading and writing activities.Year 1 children can be seen bringing their collection of ‘bugs’ to school to add to the classroom excitement of their studyin “Minibeasts” and Year 2 are looking at animals and how they adapt to their environment. To the delight of all our children, Mr Archer has joined us as Sports Master. Each class has a lesson with Mr Archer on Fridayand this term Kindergarten and Year 2 boys have an additional lesson with him on Wednesdays. It’s wonderful to see parents gathering in the playground and talking in the mornings and afternoons. It reminds us that weare on this journey together, not in isolation. Teachers are available each afternoon to answer the many questions thatarise at the beginning of the school year.We were saddened when we returned to school to see the reduction in our beautiful tree. The tree itself is extremelyhealthy and the damage was a result of the drought, followed by heavy rains. Already, the new growth can be seenbursting forth within the canopy. As we begin another year, I am reminded of the Psalmist when he says, “Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is theman who takes refuge in Him.” Just as we have ‘tasted’ the cooling benefits of the tree which has given shade and refugeto our children over the years, so God offers us His shade and protection all the days of our lives. We look forward to an exciting year which will take our children on a vital part of their learning journey and provide all ofthem with memories they will treasure always.Megan PowysHead of InfantsDATES FORYOUR DIARYParents InformationEveningWednesday23 February 2010Infants Easter ServiceTuesday 30 March 2010Sensory Integration ProgramIn mid February the Infants Department willbegin a new program of SensoryIntegration – a series of activities which willbe completed during the morning session.Studies have shown that these activities arevery helpful for children in increasing theirreadiness for learning. The activities fall into the following areas ofdevelopment: Fitness and Cardiovascular,Gross Motor, Crossing the Midline andBalance.Firstly, Fitness and Cardiovascular toimprove their fitness and, secondly, GrossMotor to strengthen their muscles in theirtrunk, shoulders and arms. These activitieshelp provide stability whilst working at thetable and are important for organizing thebrain. The third area in the program coversactivities to increase their abilities in Crossingthe Midline, an imaginary line down themiddle of our body. Movement from oneside to the other should be smooth andspontaneous, and when practised, helpswith accurate hand manipulation andwriting with the dominant hand. The fourth area will be activities to developBalance. This is very helpful in developingreading skills and for concentration. Afterbalance activities, the children will performtasks to develop hand/eye coordinationand motor planning, following visualinstruction. The Infants Staff looks forward to thechildren enjoying their program whichwill help them to take in and organizeinformation to make learning easier.Cake DaysOn Mondays, Infants childrenmay bring 20c to purchase theirmorning tea. Middle SchoolWe have enjoyed a very smooth and energising start to the school year in Middle School. On Monday 31 January, we welcomed an excited and slightly nervous Year 7 cohort. After placing them in their Home Rooms, Year 7 spent the day getting settled in; learningto read their timetables, completing surveys about their strengths as a learner, settinggoals for this year, getting to know one another and, of course, getting to know theirHome Room Teacher. The following day we were joined by students in Year 6 and Year 8. The Middle Schoolbuilding was once again abuzz with much chatter and laughter and many happyreunions as students reconnected with one another after the holidays. The staff are pleased to be back too and are enjoying the thrill that comes withdiscovering the unique personalities that make up their classes. They are eager to setabout crafting a learning environment and delivering instruction and curriculum that willmaximize students’ potential and encourage a sense of self-efficacy.This year we are delighted to welcome to the team Mrs Claire Deck who has joined us as a Year 7 Home Room Teacher. For your information the Home Room Teachers in Middle School are:Miss Gayle HowardMr Matthew SmythMrs Claire DeckMr Paul CurtinsmithMr Lucas GillmanMrs Patricia AllumMrs Kate MorrisMr Matthew Young6H6S7D7C7L8A8K8MMrs Julie Trallagan continues to serve as a specialist teacher, extending or supporting students in small groups and withHome Room Teachers in the larger classroom. Mrs Lye Chan Long continues to act as our G & T consultant whilst workingwith GERRIC at UNSW.It so pleasing to see Year 6 settle in with quiet confidence, on the playground and in the classroom. Year 7 are puttingtheir new lockers to good use and are finding their way to all their classes, mostly arriving on time and usually with thecorrect equipment! Year 8 have already demonstrated the leadership that we expect as the seniors in Middle School. Onthe playground, it is pleasing to see students getting to know one another, sitting in large groups and being inclusive. On 10 February, Year 7 students participated in a Team Building Day at the Royal National Park. The purpose of the daywas to build a sense of belonging and to support students to get to know one another in a relaxed setting. Year 7 wasaccompanied by our school captains and prefects who enthusiastically joined them down the water slide and in thepool; and led them in a variety of games on the field, modelling good leadership and pastoral care. It was a wonderfulday for Year 7 and their teachers. In the first fortnight we also enjoyed our 7-12 Swimming Carnival which was held on a perfect summer day. Congratulationsto all students in Years 7 and 8 for demonstrating a tremendous level of participation and good spirited competitiveness.Full results will be available in the following newsletter. In the next fortnight our Excellence Program for high ability students will commence, so too will various components of ourCo-curricular Program. Assessment task schedules outlining every assessment task due this year will also be distributed. You are welcome to contact your child’s Home Room Teacher at any time throughout the year and I encourage you tofeel free to do so rather than wait for the more formal occasions. For Year 8 parents, an Afternoon Tea is being held onThursday 24 February at 2.30pm to allow you to meet with your child’s Home Room Teacher. The start of a school year is always exciting and brings opportunities for new beginnings. This is a good time to ask yourchild about the goals they have set for themselves this year and to explore with them the ways they need you to supportthem. In light of their goals, agreements about TV, computer time, household chores, and bed times can then be made.Selecting a good book to read every afternoon or agreeing on a book that you will read to your child can also make for avery special start. We look forward to what this year has to bring!“Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carryit on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus”Philippians 1:6Mrs Jeannie DonsworthHead of Middle School
