<strong>Libera</strong>SeriesBehind the wheelof innovation

There is a great effortbehind this project. The world changes. It is inevitable. It is often a steadyevolution, but at times sudden changes occur thatlead to new scenarios in just a short time. Theintroduction of electric vehicles on the marketentails the creation of new habits, new structures, and new needs. In such an evolving context, it isimportant to establish points of reference that guidethe change; in this case, the more qualified, and thuscredible, figure becomes the main player. SCAMEdid not hesitate for a second to offer a tangible andfunctional contribution in order to achievesustainable choices from a technological, economicand environmental standpoint.A considerable commitment, which SCAME has gladly beendevoted to for many years, with the aim of providingtomorrow’s drivers with practical and safe instruments.3

We have foundedto buildIn Europe, there are many technicians with experienceand skills, but in order to make the most of this wealth itEV PLUGALLIANCEwas necessary to find a way to coordinate the work beingcarried out, channel choices and share objectives.SCAME, in conjunction with Legrand and Schneider Electric, foundedEV Plug Alliance, an association that aims to ensure compliance ofconnections used to supply electrical vehicles with CEI standards. Theassociation’s efforts are geared towards setting up a European standardcapable of guaranteeing the highest levels of safety.4

the Allianceon good ideas.5

6We set only one possiblechoice for ourselves:

total safety!European standards define possible cases for electricvehicle connection to the source of power, Within thestandardization activities coordinated EV Plug Alliance,SCAME has elected to develop its products by presentingoriginal and ground-breaking solutions on the topic ofsafety, solutions that have been appreciated andconsidered as reference standards at the European level.SCAME thus received proper recognition for the valuableexpertise gained while developing its range of productswith innovative spirit and designing ability.IPXXD PROTECTIONParagraph 11.3.2 of standard IEC/EN 61851-1 requires IPXXDprotection (entry test of wire with 1-mm diameter ) againstaccidental contact for connected and unconnected plugs incase of two-way energy transfer. This requirement is especiallyimportant as it prevents users not trained in the use of theseconnectors from coming in contact with potentially live parts;moreover, it is required by most European countries. TheLIBERA Series connectors satisfy this requirement thanks to theadoption of terminals and spinotti protected by shutters thatcan be opened only after the plug is inserted into the socket,as it has been for years now for domestic connectors. As theShutters satisfy the IPXXD degree of protection, the LIBERASeries connectors do not require additional sectioning devicesin order to achieve an equivalent degree of protection.Closed shutters. Plug shutter opening. Socket shutter opening. Complete insertion.7

For the softwarewe haveA truly complete project cannot be limited to defining thetechnical characteristics of the equipment. In such acomplex scenario such as the one that is evolving in thissector, it is crucial to provide for advanced utilization modesof the power supply system, taking advantage of plantmanagement technologies that allow an optimization ofequipment use.SCAME has provided for the interaction with sophisticatedcontrol and management tools, also developing anadvanced software system that makes the SCAME worldcompatible with the most depending market requirements.8

The legislativescenario is complex. While contributing to defining the new standards, SCAMEput technology at the service of common sense, with theaim of pursuing practical and intelligent design choices.Indeed, the choices made when defining connectionmethods and designing the relevant equipment have ledto the offer of simple and safe products. This means thatthe utilization methods are perfectly suited to the user, that production costs are low and that safety is ensured.10

Our solution is simple. And efficient.IEC/EN 61851-1: RECHARGING METHODSThe reference standard for EV charging stations is the IEC/EN61851-1, which envisages four charging modes:Moreover, depending on the type of cable connection type, thereare three different possible cases:MODE 1Connection of the EV to thea.c. mains using domesticconnectors up to 16A, classA 30mA differential protectionupstream.MODE 2Connection of the EV to thea.c. mains using domestic orindustrial connectors up to32A, class A 30mA differentialprotection, control device onthe cable.MODE 3Connection of the EV to thea.c. mains with dedicatedconnectors, class A 30mAdifferential protection, controldevice in the charging station.ACAC PWMACPWMCASE AEV connection to the a.c.mains using a supply cableand plug permanently attachedto the EV.CASE BEC connection to an a.c.mains using a detachablecable equipped with plugand socket.CASE CEV connection to the a.c.mains using cable and plugpermanently attached to thecharging station.MODE 4Connection of the EV to thea.c. mains with outboardbattery charger.DCIEC 62196-1 (FDIS) AND 62196-2 (FDIS): MODE 3 CONNECTORSThe reference standards for Mode 3 connectors are the IEC 62196-1 and 2, and they envisage three different types of system:TYPE 1Single-phase, 2 pilot contacts,32A, 250V~, IPXXB, accessoriesfor vehicle-side only.TYPE 2single/three-phase, 2 pilotcontacts, 63A, 500V~, IPXXB,mandatory interlock to avoiddisconnection under load.TYPE 3A - for light vehiclessingle-phase, 1 pilot contact,16A, 250V~, IPXXD socket,IPXXB plug disconnectableunder load.TYPE 3C - for all vehiclessingle/three-phase, 2 pilot contacts,63A, 500V~, IPXXD socket,IPXXD plug disconnectableunder load up to 32A.11

The connectiondeveloped by <strong>Scame</strong>.CHARGING MODE 3The SCAME charging stations used charging mode 3, incompliance with standard IEC/EN 61851-1.Charging mode 3 consists in connecting the vehicle to the a.c.mains using specific connectors and in presence of a pilot controlcircuit inside the station in order to verify continuity of the protectiveconductor between the vehicle and the grid during phase. This control is necessary in order to make sure that no dangerousvoltage can discharge through accidental contact with unawareindividuals; generally speaking, it is mandatory for vehicles withpower above 3kW and, in Italy, for public or private environmentsopened to third parties (see table). The control circuit alsoarranges for communications between the charging station andthe vehicle (PWM circuit) and for identification of cable size(Resistor Coding).TRACTIONBATTERYIN-VEHICLECHARGEREARTHTERMINALVEHICLEPLUGCONNECTORFLEXIBLECABLEPLUGSOCKETCHARGINGSTATIONPWM (PULSE WIDTH MODULATION) CIRCUITOperation of the PWM Circuit is described in Annex A to standardIEC/EN 61851-1, and it arranges for communication between chargingstation and electric vehicle: the station communicates to thevehicle grid availability by means of a frequency-modulated signal, the vehicle adapts the load by returning its own status through avoltage value. In case of vehicles without PWM, the circuit worksin “simplified mode”, measuring the earth resistance value only, and the station limits the charging current to 16A.RESISTOR CODINGResistor Coding operation is described in Annex B. 5 of standardIEC/EN 61851-1, and it is mandatory, like the 3C-type connectors, when the plug can be wired with cables featuringdifferent section and capacity. Depending on the capacity, aresistance is fitted between the PP contact and the earth, whose value identifies the cable size. The PWM circuit thenmakes sure that the charging current is lower than the maximumdrawable current.Duty cycle andfrequency measurement(Vb)PilotVehiclecontact1,3 K 3%or 270 3%R32,74 K 3%S2R2DChassisEarth(ground)EVSER11k 3%CsVoltagemeasurement(Va)(Vg)Oscillator1kHz ± 12VRcVehicle connectorProximityEarthto vehicleSensePull-upUtilityearthEV12ITALY’S POSITION (CEI CT312)AmbientClosed to othersOpen to othersPower< 3kW ≥ 3kW < 3kW≥ 3kWCurrentUp to 16A 230V~ ( 1 ) ( 2 )from 16 to 32A from 32 to 63Afrom 16 to 32A230/400V~ 230/400V~230/400V~PlugSocketModeAnti-extraction3A + adaptordomestic 16Adomestic 16A1-Up to 16A230V~ ( 1 )3A3C3A3C3optionalfrom 32 to 63A230/400V~IEC309IEC3091-3A3C3A3C3optional3C3C3optional3C3C3optional3C3C3optional3C3C3optional( 1 ) For L-category vehicles, use connector type 3A. Type 3AconnectorsType 3A connectors were developed in Italy in 2000 as the onlyconnection system used to charge electrical vehicles in publicareas in mode 3. Featuring a construction derived from the <strong>Scame</strong>IEC309 plugs, from which it inherited the snap-on quick closingdevice, it is unique due to the presence of an additional CPcontact used for the pilot circuit in order to verify continuity of theprotective conductors in compliance with standard CEI 69-6. Dueits small size, it is the preferred connector for small vehicles, suchas scooters and motorcycles, with power below 3kW. Thanks tothe adaptors, the 3A plug can also be used for charging inenvironments closed to third parties, such as private garages, useing mode 1.N.B.: the IPXXD degree of protection, and consequently the shutters, are not necessary for type 3A plugs as the vehicles for which it is intended do not require it.MODE 1RECHARGING IN ENVIRONMENTSCLOSED TO THIRD PARTIESVehicle connection to the a.c. mains usingnormalized connectors up to 16A.MODE 3RECHARGING IN ENVIRONMENTSOPEN TO THIRD PARTIESVehicle connection to the a.c. mains usingspecific connectors, pilot circuit control.Laboratory testsRESISTANCE TESTS14

Type 3CconnectorsThe type 3C connector is the connection system intended forelectric vehicles with rating above 3kW, such as automobiles, promoted by the EV Plug Alliance, an association founded by<strong>Scame</strong> – Schneider - Legrand, as a single European solution onthe infrastructure side. Derived from the type 3A connector, ithas the same protection characteristics against indirect contactsand the additional pole used to verify continuity of the protectiveconductor. The evolution consists in the possibility to wire in both singlephaseand three-phase, in the increased nominal current, and inthe introduction of shutters on the plug side (a necessaryrequirement in case of “Smart Grid”) and the additional PP polefor cable size identification. Due to the heavy-duty operatingconditions, special attention was paid to the choice of materialsin order to guarantee resistance to heat, to chemical agents andto mechanical stress, such as to fall within the strict parametersset by the automotive sector. Moreover, the ergonomic aspect of the mobile plug was studiedin order to facilitate the opening of the protective cover (withautomatic closing against dirt in case of a fall) with only one hand.BEHAVIOUR WITH CHEMICAL AND ATMOSPHERIC AGENTSSalinesolutionAcidsBasesSolventsConcentrated Diluted Concentrated Diluted Hexane Benzol Acetone AlcoholMineraloilUVraysResistantLimitedResistanceResistantLimitedResistanceResistantNotResistantNotResistantNotResistantLimitedResistanceResistantResistant15

Cover openingPlug insertion. The flush-mounting sockets of the LIBERA Series are alsoavailable in the optional version with built-in latching system inorder to avoid accidental or intentional extraction of the plug inrecharging stations located in unsupervised places, such assquares and roads. The block is achieved by means of a pin, operated by a bi-stable actuator that also blocks the openingof the cover during the pause phase. For proper systemmanagement, the socket also provides the position status of theblock (inserted/not inserted) and of the cover (closed) by meansof 3 built-in micro switches. All plugs included in the LIBERASeries are also equipped with a hole in the bottom part of thefrutto in which the pin is housed. Sockets with the block aresupplied with no actuator piloting systems, consequently theoperating principle shown in the figure at the side presupposescoupling to an external control system supplied by <strong>Scame</strong> in thecase of assembled systems.4. This socket can only be used in those environments that do not require mode 3.The socket is supplied without the pilot system.16
