cftechmodifying guide: corsair v4Engine“for £2000 you can puttogether a pinto’dcorsair, includingbuying the car”Standard, non-2000E engines are under-carb’d, so either upgrade to the 2000E’sWeber 32 DIF, or even better fit the 28/36 DCD from the Mk1 Cortina GT engine.InspirationThree Corsair V4s to getyou started on themodifying bandwagon. The Essex V4 has a poorreputation, and it’s largelyunjustified. The problem is, it wasnever intended to be aperformance unit and socompared with the Kent-basedengines from the same period, was relatively low-revving andunderpowered — and sooverlooked by the tuning industryat the time. But in 2000E form (pushing out102 bhp), the V4 made the Corsaira genuine 100+ mph car, and theycan be pushed further — as longas you realise you’re tuning it fortorque, not outright power.Like the Kent, capacity changeswere achieved by altering thestroke (the blocks and bore sizeremained the same) so if yours isthe 1700 version, you canimmediately bring it up to 2 litressimply by fitting the biggerengine’s crank and rods. From here on it’s a case oftracking down 2000E (or Capri2000GT) parts — the twin-chokeWeber 32 DIF carb, higher-liftcamshaft, and cylinder headswhich featured larger ports. The Essex V4 (right) has a poor rep, butit’s largely unjustified. Like its V6 biggerbrother though, stronger timing gear(below) is an absolute must.To achieve more powerinvolves getting the heads portedfurther, and swapping the 2000Ecarb for the Cortina GT’s Weber28/36 DCD. Piper used to list ahigh-lift cam for this engine (the5FG/4) and if they still have thespecs they should be able toreprofile yours. There are nofreeflow exhaust manifoldsavailable, so it’s a case of use whatyou’ve got or go custom-made.With all these extra modsyou’re looking at around 130 bhp,and that really is your limit for anaturally-aspirated V4, unless youstart having bespoke parts made. Finally, seriously considerinvesting in stronger timing gear. The original is fibre-based andprone to shearing. Car Clinic do akit which includes a cast-ironcrank gear, alloy camshaft gear, gaskets and new oil seal for £166.BUY AND BUild ITHere’s what you need to put together a cracking, Pinto-poweredCorsair, all for just over £2000 — and that includes buying the car!Corsair V4 £10002-litre Pinto £150Modified sump and pick-up £1501500 Crossmember £40Crossflow/Pinto mounts £30RS2000 manifold £40Modified Sierra downpipe £3032/36 DGV carb and inlet £75Type E box £70Cable clutch conversion £40Modified propshaft £80Mk4/5 Cortina radiator £30Uprated front springs £252.8i rear springs £402.8i rear dampers £60M16 callipers £802.8i discs £406J RS four-spokes £100Total £2080“if you’re keeping thev4, seriously considerinvesting in somestronger timing gear”InteriorWhile the Pre-Crossflowpoweredcars came with very ’60stwo-tone interiors, the V4’s weremuch more subduedwith a moreconventional dashand bigger (but lesscomfortable seats). The 2000E was thebest-equipped with acentre console, blackvinyl trim andfour-gauge dash, soan easy upgradewould be to fit this lot— but you have tofind it all first!Otherwise Mk1 and Mk2Cortina seats bolt straight in, orAbove: Deluxe interiors are OK, butthe 2000E’s is the best-equipped.Most period wheels will fit (right).Recaros will easily fitand look the business.track down some sportier seatsfrom a later Ford (or othermarque) which can be retrimmedto suit if necessary— black leatherRecaros from a 4x4Sapphire Cosworthwould look prettygood, we reckon. All cars from 1967onwards came witha wood veneer dashpanel and if this isn’tto your taste youcould hunt down ablack vinyl versionfrom an early V4 Deluxe or GT, orstrip back the wood and paint itwith black, crackle paint. The original steering wheel is aproper spindly affair. SpokedCortina 1600E ones fit straight onand can be picked up fairlycheaply, as can most periodaftermarket ones — or go forsomething new like a classicMoto-Lita if your budget willstretch to it.SpecialistsBilstein UK01455 283407Car Clinic01254 775845www.v6engines.comClassic Ford Parts01344 304064Ex-Pressed Steel Panels01535 632721www.steelpanels.co.ukGoldendays01603 881155Old Ford Auto Services01344 422731www.oldfordautos.co.ukPiper Cams01303 245300www.pipercams.co.ukSourcesClassic Ford Back Issues0844 8481602Corsair Owners’ Club01634 272232www.fordcorsair.atFord Corsair Forumwww.fordcorsair.co.ukConsul Corsair sitewww.fordconsulcorsair.co.ukClassic Ford’s CorsairOwner: SimonFeatured: every monthIt’s not built yet, but when done, thisformer Deluxe should be one of thebest-looking modified four-doorson the scene.Pick Me UpOwner: Robert ShandFeatured: November 2008Essex V6 power, lots of custommods, oh, and a pick-up bed...
