Lansing CommunityCollegeValues CompactLansing Community College existsto serve the community and all itsmembers. Therefore, each of us mustbe willing to examine our most deeplyheld beliefs and demonstrate thecourage to act on them. To that end,we present the following commitmentas a public declaration ofthose beliefs:I will value the uniquenessof each person.I will be responsible for myown learning and for supportingthe learning of others.I will pursue the highestacademic standards.I will communicate openly andhonestly, receiving and providingfeedback with respect.I will maintain a healthybalance between professional demandsand personal wellness.I will provide excellent service.I will promote innovation and creativeproblem-solving.I will value allcollege resources.“When I dreamalone, it is just a dream. When we dreamtogether, it is thebeginning of reality.”Dear Friends of the LCC Foundation,“When I dream alone, it is just a dream. When we dream together, it is the beginning ofreality.”This Brazilian proverb expresses what the LCC Foundation believes: that together, we can makedreams come true. Each one of us has learned, throughout our lives, that the support of others is essential.Knowing that we are loved and cared for makes all the difference in the world. This caringoften comes to us from those closest to us: our families, our friends, the people with whom wework. Sometimes it can come to us from people we don’t even know: people who care enoughabout others and about their communities to afford us opportunities we might otherwise neverhave. There is no such thing as a self-made man or woman. We are who we are not onlythrough our own efforts but through the efforts of others. The Lansing Community College Foundation is a tangible symbol of that kind of caring. TheFoundation brings together donors, volunteers, and mentors: a college here to serve thecommunity; faculty and staff who work long and hard to give their best: and students whochoose LCC as the place they want to be. Please join our dream. Together we will make it areality.Sincerely,Nancy LittleChair of the Lansing Community College Foundation Board of DirectorsBrazilian proverb

Lansing CommunityCollege Boardof TrusteesChris A. LavertyChairpersonKathy G. PelleranVice ChairpersonDear Friends,Native American folklore includes the making and sharing of small, handmade icons calleddream catchers. The purpose of dream catchers is to catch the good dreams of the ownerwhile the nightmares “pass” through the open web.Like these symbols of native culture, Lansing Community College is the dream catcher forthousands of students. Every day, men and women of all ages look to LCC for assistance inrealizing their dreams of career success, economic prosperity, and personal fulfillment.Whether in the classroom, in the library, on the web, in the cafeteria, or in the assessmentcenter, LCC is a place where students can learn, grow, and capture their dreams. No one’s dreams should be deferred because they cannot afford to attend LCC or because theCollege cannot afford to offer a program or provide the instructional equipment needed toteach. Your support of LCC through your contributions to the LCC Foundation makes ourstudent’s dreams their present reality. We are all stewards of these dreams, catchers of the promise and potential of our students. Asstewards, we are responsible for building a campus environment where students can learn andwork in places worthy of the ambitions and aspirations that they bring with them. Theseclassroom buildings need to be designed and crafted for adults who want competent teachersusing the latest technology. Our vision of building a new Technical Training Center, MichiganTechnical Education Center and Health and Human Services Careers Building are dreams thatare now coming alive on campus. Dear Friends,In the months I’ve been at Lansing Community College as Director of the LCCFoundation, I’ve witnessed first hand what this College can do in the lives of itsstudents. The future belongsto those who believein the beauty oftheir dreams.Eleanor RooseveltOur students come to us with high hopes, anticipating learning and growth, wantingan education, a better life for themselves and their families, and a fulfilling career. Many of them are young; they come here directly from high school, apprehensive andyet ready for the next part of their lives to begin. Others are older, returning toschool in order to change careers or update their skills. Some older students arecoming to school for the first time, realizing that the education they passed up whenthey were younger really is important to them. All of them come with their ownexpectations and their own dreams. For many, the financial assistance that theFoundation can provide makes the difference in whether they can come to school atall. Without it, they could not afford to take this important step. Without it, thosedreams would never come true. It has been truly inspiring to talk to these students, hear them express their excitement about what they are learning and theirappreciation for the assistance they have received. It has been inspiring also to work with our donors and volunteers. Each and everyone of them understand the importance of dreams and are willing to expend theirtalents, time, and resources to help others. They do this not for recognition andreward, but out of a capacity for caring that touches us all.Thank you for the opportunity of working with each of you.Joan BauerFoundation Director, Lansing Community College

They’ve worked hard and studied hard toget good grades.”The Capitol Area Harley Owners Group, which cannumber more than 400 during the summer months and issponsored by Capitol Harley Davidson, raises scholarshipmoney from the proceeds of a raffle for a new HarleyDavidson motorcycle each year. Membership dues areanother source of scholarship funding for the group,Geddie says.Criteria for the scholarship includes financial need, butGeddie says more important is a student’s desire to findways to succeed. “It helps when the student activelygoes out and pursues financial support. That diligenceindicates that they will have success at LCC,” he says.Jim Morin, vice president and general manager forCapital Enterprise in Delta Township, had oversight ofthe Capitol Area Harley Owners Group’s scholarshipprogram since its inception in 1997 until earlier this year.He says, “Every student who has been the recipient ofour scholarship has been a success story. Zonta and LCC Team Up For StudentsLucile Belen, long-time Zonta member and friend of LCC.he Women’s Resource Center at Lansing Community College has a friend in ZontaInternational. As an organization with a like-minded vision, Zonta has donated consistently andgenerously through several Greater Lansing area clubs to support scholarships forwomen at LCC. Over the years, the local Zonta Clubs’ combined contributions to the LCCFoundation are over $50,000.“Our mission is to advance the status of women locally and world-wide,” says DeniseQuarles, President of the Michigan Capital Area Zonta Club. “We believe there is no betterway to improve women’s status than through education.”The Michigan Capital Area Zonta Club has donated $1,000 annually to the Women’sResource Center for the past two years, and has conducted various fundraisers for LCCstudents on and off through the last two decades. The club is among three local Zontagroups that have raised dollars to support programs, services and scholarships through theWomen’s Resource Center. The Zonta Club of Lansing and the Zonta Club of East Lansingare the others. Membership in Zonta consists of women in a variety of traditional and nontraditionalprofessions including law, education, medicine and human services.“Women must be prepared to support themselves,” says Lucile Belen, a long-time memberof the Lansing Zonta club, as well as a familiar city businesswoman, former city councilmember, and philanthropist. “Education is very important. The better educated ourcommunity is, the better community we have.”Belen encouraged Zonta to establish a scholarship with the dollars a long-time friend leftto the club when she passed away. The Theo Fulton Memorial Scholarship is intended forstudents pursing a degree in health careers. Like Belen’s other fund—the Belen HealthCareers Scholarship—recipients must be willing to work for one year in a local area healthcare facility upon graduation.Members of the East Lansing Zonta group have a similar focus on women attending LCC,with an eye toward assisting students striving to overcome tremendous personal andfinancial hardships. For 10 years, the club has bestowed Literacy Awards worth hundreds ofdollars to deserving students nominated by the Women’s Resource Center.Club Treasurer Joan Hartwig says Zonta members enjoy the local angle of raising moneyfor scholarships, partly because of the opportunity to meet award recipients at an annualbreakfast hosted by the LCC Foundation.“They’re women with children, single-parents, people trying to make a better life forthemselves,” says Hartwig. “When you hear the struggles they’ve gone through and yousee what they’ve done, it’s inspiring. You wish you had more to give them.” Ann KammererAnn Kammerer is a freelance writer for Foundation Focus Magazine.Women’sResource CenterThe Women’s Resource Center is forpeople who may be:• returning to school,• exploring career options,• needing support in lifetransitions,• developing personal andprofessional skills. All of the services of the Women’sResource Center (WRC) are free andinclude academic advising andcareer counseling, financial aid, assistance in childcare expenses andconcerns, a back-to-school workshopfor new students and referrals toappropriate community resources. Most importantly, the WRC providesa caring support system. There is financial assistanceavailable for help with tuition, textbooks, transportation andchildcare if income guidelines andother eligibility criteria are met. These funds are available for singleparents, homemakers who haveworked without pay to care for thehome and have diminishedmarketable skills, are unemployed orunderemployed, displacedhomemakers, and those who areseeking training and employment inoccupations which have traditionallybeen underrepresented by theirgender. Annual Bev Hunt Award Recipient:Irina Kemp Speaks for HerselfDreams aregreat. Whenthey disappearyou may stillbe here, but youwill haveceased to live.Nancy Astorvery year, the Women’s Resource Center (WRC)chooses someone to receive the Beverly HuntAward. Named after the founder of the WRC, itis given to a person who exemplifies the idealsand goals of the Center. This year’s award winnertraveled a long way to get to where she is today.Irina Kemp came to the United States from the Ukrainewith her American husband seven years ago. In her smallhometown, she worked as a teacher of English and as apiano teacher. With one son (Constantine) from aprevious marriage, Irina was excited to move to America. She had another son, Alex, now five, but soon realizedthat her difficult marriage could not succeed. After herdivorce, she considered returning to the Ukraine, butsays, “It is not the same country I left. Everything haschanged. I decided to stay in America.”But her degree from a Russian university did not certifyher to work as a teacher in the United States. She wouldhave to return to a university to earn a teachingcertificate. Knowing the tuition at four-year institutions,Irina knew that this was not financially possible. Shesubstituted in area schools, but couldn’t depend onworking every day. Childcare was also a problem withlast minute calls to teach. She needed more security andstability in order to support her sons.Irina’s story is best told in her own words, the wordsshe used when she accepted her award:“My name is Irina. I am a nurse. I feel very good aboutthe world and my place in it.Four years ago, I was a single mother with two boys, $20in the pocket, and no plan for the future. I did not evenhave a green card. My children did get help from thestate in the amount of $10 a month. I knew I had to dosomething. Starting college was scary, but I had to get aprofession in this country. The judge, who reduced myonly income (child support) to $40 a week, said to me,“Well, you choose a luxury of going to college instead ofbeing a good mom and getting a job. How can I helpyou?”My mind was raving. What to do with the children? Howto pay tuition? For daycare? Can I study at all? After thefirst semester (spring 2000), I told myself, “That’s it; it’sundoable. I will never afford it. I do have to be a goodmom and get a job.” It was a vicious circle. And then afriend of mine brought me to the Women’s ResourceCenter, and I filled a few applications without muchhope. Somewhere in June, I got a call from Sheila. I didnot believe what she told me: I would receive ascholarship to go and study nursing; the WRC would helpme through. My tuition would be paid. I would getvouchers for textbooks and uniform. Even parking wouldbe covered. Extremely important: the WRC would helpme pay for daycare! Ruthi found us a babysitter withwhom we stay and who became like a family member. Iwas weeping while filling out the papers in your office. Itsounded like a fairy tale. It was too good to be true.College is behind me now. Not all of it was a fairy tale. When life felt overwhelming, I always reminded myself,‘Remember how lucky you are; you got the scholarship.Think of those who have to struggle their way throughstudies and work!’Now that the biggest challenge of my life is over, I wantto express my deepest gratitude to people who made itpossible. First, my parents. They gave me perseverance (Ilike the word stubbornness) that kept me going, and thepositive attitude no matter what. My parents’ favoriteinstruction was if you do something, do it good, or don’tdo it at all. And, of course, the sense of humor. Whenhaving a choice of laughing or weeping, always chooselaughing. They came here and stayed with us during thelast semester, just to let me finish the nursing program.Thank you!I would like to thank the nursing careers department forsetting high goals and expectation on all of us, forencouraging us to be the best. I could invite one personfrom the department, and this is Margie Clark, thedirector of the nursing program. Thank you very much.Your doors were always open for the students. Yourenthusiasm is inspiring. You love of profession iscontagious. You have given us a good start.

“For many women like me there is a formula:no scholarship equals no college. The scholarship is more than financial thing. You give a chance in life.”Irina KempDear Andy, Linda and Linda, Ruthi, Sheila, Beth, Andrea!(Ed. Note: Staff of the Women’s Resouce Center) You aredoing a very important job. I would never underestimatethe significance of it. Let me put it this way: for manywomen like me there is a formula: no scholarship equalsno college. The scholarship is more than a financialthing. You give a chance in life. And for me there wereextras: words of encouragement, a shoulder whenneeded. It’s greatly appreciated. This award is a big thingfor my family. At first, I could not understand why youchose me, because you were the people who encouragedand supported me. And then I realized: you not only makeeducation possible for us, you want us to succeed. This ispriceless! The judge was right. I did choose the luxury of college, the luxury of having a respected profession, the luxury of staying in this wonderful country, the luxury of getting my life back to me,the luxury of setting a good example to my children.Thank you for making it possible!”Irina is now working full-time as an oncology nurse atIngham Regional Medical Center. She and her sons arenow American citizens.Irina Kemp and Margie Clark

Apprenticeships Offer Many OpportunitiesAlways dreamand shoot higherthan you knowhow to. Don’tbother just to bebetter than yourcontemporariesor predecessors.Try to be betterthan yourself.William Faulknerith pay and benefits better than most highschool students expect, a variety of apprenticeshipprograms supported by LansingCommunity College represent a formalizedcareer-track for skilled tradesmen and post-secondaryeducation.“Serving an apprenticeship and acquiring a skilled tradeopens so many doors of opportunity,” says LawrenceHildago, training director for the Lansing Electrical JointApprenticeship and Training Committee. “Our mission isto provide training and schooling for apprentices andjourneymen in the electrical construction industry.”The Lansing Electrical JATC industrial electricianprogram is just one of dozens of apprenticeship occupationssupported by Lansing Community College. Apprenticeshiptraining combines daily on-the-job experiencewith classroom instruction in technical requirements thatare field related.LCC’s apprenticeship program supports a total of 32occupations, including; automotive technician, machinist, residential builder and computer repair technician.“Our relationship with Lansing Community Collegealways has been and continues to be extremely positive.LCC has been supportive of our efforts and we dowhatever we can to support them,” Hildago says. The Lansing Electrical JATC works with apprentices fromthe International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers LocalUnion 665, which represents more than 700 electriciansacross seven counties in mid-Michigan. Nearly 140apprentices are currently in the program.Lansing Electrical JATC apprenticeships include insidewireman, residential wireman and telecommunicationsinstaller-technician. Hildago says apprentices are paidfor on the job training and have their tuition for relatedtraining at LCC paid for.“Our training classes are listed as courses at LCC andtake place at the school. Apprentices receive regularcollege credit, even though some of the classes are nontraditionalin nature like national electrical code classesand safety classes,” Hildago says. Over 85 percent ofthose who start the apprenticeship receive theirjourneyman card.Classes for Lansing Electrical JATC apprentices will moveinto LCC’s new high-tech technical training center underconstruction in Delta Township when it opens, as willmany of the LCC apprenticeship programs. The Lansing Electrical JATC inside wireman apprenticeshiptakes five years to complete and requires 8,000hours of on the job training and 180 hours of relatedschooling per year. The residential wiring and telecommunicationsinstaller-technician apprenticeships can becompleted within three years and require a total of 4,500hours of on the job training and 180 hours of classroomwork per year. The length of time spent required to complete anapprenticeship is determined by the complexity of theskills required, Hildago says, and related training canvary by field. Some industries require as many as 200 to300 hours yearly in study by apprentices. A company orunion typically sponsors an apprenticeship, sometimesjointly, in conjunction with post-secondary schools.Lansing Electrical JATC has established a $1,000 yearlyscholarship for women distributed through the LansingCommunity College Foundation. “Our goal is to developinterest in our trade among females. The opportunitiesright now for women are terrific,” Hildago added.Mike Heiler, superintendent of field personnel for FDHayes Electrical in Lansing, says, “A lot of young men andwomen don’t realize the opportunity in this field. Whenyou finish this apprenticeship, since it is standardized, you can go anywhere in the country and find a job onceyou get your card. You get the chance to work and get aneducation - you just have to pay for the books.”The job outlook for electricians should remain promisingfor at least the next five years, Heiler says, because ofthe number of expected retirements of older skilledworkers. “When the economy picks up again we’ll need alot of people.”Heiler says the Lansing Electrical JATC apprenticeshipprogram includes apprentices of all ages. “It’s never toolate for a career change. We have a few older peoplewho decided this is what they want to do. Good forthem.”Apprenticeship candidates must be at least 18 years old, possess a valid drivers license; be a high school graduateor have a GED and demonstrate an aptitude for readingand algebra.“The candidates go through an interview process andthen are scored accordingly. Those who score the highestare considered when we start a new class,” Hildagosays.Applications are available at the Lansing Electrical JATCoffice at 811 N. Ways of Giving:Making a Differencehere are many ways of giving to the Lansing Community College Foundation, and they don’t all involve writing a check. And not only are donors able to givein many ways, they can also choose where their resources are allocated, thusensuring that their gifts can truly reflect their interests and concerns. If a donor is interested in making an immediate financial contribution to the LCCFoundation, they can choose:• an unrestricted gift enables the Foundation to respond to the needs of thecollege with maximum flexibility;• a contribution to an already established scholarship (a list of scholarships ison page 24 of this magazine);• a gift to a particular program or department;• a gift in support of the new LCC construction projects,• money to establish a named scholarship. There are other ways of giving as well. These include:• An endowment gift. A gift for endowment is a contribution to a permanentfund that earns money for the college year after year. The principal from anendowed fund remains invested and the earnings from interest are used tofund scholarships or programs.• A bequest. Donors can stipulate a gift in their wills to benefit the LCCFoundation. Monies can be put into the Foundation endowment or into anunrestricted fund.• A charitable remainder unitrust. This option for giving puts property intoa trust where it will be tax sheltered for growth and pays an annual incomefor life based on its growing value.• Insurance. Donors can give an insurance policy to create a planned gift. This is as easy as changing the beneficiary of the policy to the LansingCommunity College Foundation. For more information about any of these giving options, contact Sue Fisher at the LCCFoundation at 483-1985 or e-mail fishers8@lcc.edu. Your attorney or financialadvisor can also answer your questions. Jane Whittington
