It is apurpose-built research and teaching unitfor microbiology, including containmentlevel 3 facilities and currently houses themicrobiology research groups of theSchool of Biological Sciences. Thebuilding was renamed the Knightbuilding in 2012 in honour of ProfessorBCJG Knight, the first Head of theDepartment, to celebrate 60 years ofmicrobiology at Reading.Key Facts Critical water treatment systems tobe replaced Short programme Restricted installation spaceThe Client’s NeedsThe steam generators in the Knight Building were due for replacementand the Facilities Department decided to take the opportunity toreplace not only the boiler make-up water treatment system but theaging demineralisation plant that supplied demineralised to thelaboratory. The main contract for the refurbishment project wasawarded to local mechanical and electrical contractors, SSE Contracting.Among a number of subcontractors was ELGA <strong>Process</strong> <strong>Water</strong>, whosesubcontract covered decommissioning and removal of the redundantplant and supply, delivery, installation and testing of the new £50kwater treatment system. The site work would have to be carried outduring a short three month window and a number of subcontractorswould be on site at one time, all working in a restricted 5m x 5m area ontwo floors.The SolutionELGA <strong>Process</strong> <strong>Water</strong>’s solution in terms of plantwas straightforward enough: a duplex IonSoftsoftener to deliver up to 7m 3 /hr of soft water forboiler feed and a Duo Eclipse 300demineralisation system to supply up to 4m 3 /hr ofdemineralised water (
