General in<strong>for</strong>mation <strong>for</strong> referrersFundingApproval is sought <strong>for</strong> charging and full costs requested from the patients’healthcare trust on an individual basis.ProcedureThe programme provides a multidisciplinary assessment; in<strong>for</strong>mation andsupport prior to the operation, the resource and expertise to implant, switch-onand tune the device, the follow up rehabilitation and ongoing support andin<strong>for</strong>mation.Following an initial assessment the patient will undergo, if suitable, a fullcochlear implant assessment including CT and MRI scans. Patientspossessing retrocochlear pathologies or cerebral defects will be excluded.The programme prefers to carry out the necessary electrophysical andradiological assessments in <strong>Bristol</strong>.This is a comprehensive programme and we will arrange <strong>for</strong> long termmonitoring and maintenance <strong>of</strong> equipment, the cost <strong>of</strong> which will be chargedto the referring trust. Patients should demonstrate a willingness and long termcommitment to participate in the programme.ResultsThe ultimate benefit achievable cannot be accurately predicted prior to theoperation. However, there will be a clear programme <strong>of</strong> postoperative testing,tuning and rehabilitation to achieve the best results possible.Research and AuditThe programme is involved in continuing audit and research into cochlearimplants.
