ATEX guarantees your safetyELECTRO-TECHNOLOGY FOR INDUSTRYTypes of protection systemsThe European standards describe eight different explosionprotection methods that can be applied in order to makeelectrical equipment suitable for use in the various ex zones. The different types of protection vary widely with regard to thedegree of complexity and some of them are not usable withmobile equipment, for example. The type of ignition protectionis selected with the greatest of care for Pfannenberg devicesin order to guarantee the best possible cost-benefit ratio.Pfannenberg uses the following protection systems for itsalarm equipment:Flame proof enclosure ‘d’In the case of pressure-resistant encapsulation, the actualoperating equipment is built into a pressure-resistant housing. In the event of an explosion inside, the housing prevents anignition breakthrough into the surrounding area. The explosionis therefore restricted to the interior of the device. On account ofthe necessary wall thickness, devices in this protection systemare of a very sturdy construction and thus also often very wellsuited for adverse environmental conditions.Enhanced safety ‘e’This type of enhanced protection is usable with only a few typesof equipment/components (e.g. terminals). This type of protectionis conveniently often combined with pressure-resistantencapsulation. In alarm products, this means that all essentialcomponents are housed in the pressure-resistant housing andonly the connection terminals are accessible in the increasedsafety housing. For this reason Pfannenberg also offers mostdevices with an ‘e connection box’ in order to enable simple andsafe electrical connections to be made. The sensitive electroniccomponents are therefore protected against accidental damageduring mounting.TechnologyIntrinsically safety ‘i’In the ignition protection type ‘i‘, the current and voltage of allenergy storage devices as well as the complete device arelimited to the extent that no ignition sparks and no excessivelyhot surfaces can be generated. An explosive atmosphere candevelop, but it will not be ignited.191
