T
he summer is almost gone and we are heralding into the fall season.
What a year it’s been for us so far! From the endless political
banter to annoying hurricanes, we are happy to report on topics
much more refreshing than other local media.
This issue we get ready for the fall season with stories that explore the
latest in “going green” in fashion, mixed media art, and notably creative
design. We also take you inside a private tour of the most exclusive
Design District showrooms and boutiques, where elite residents had the
pleasure to see in person.
Our interior design stories discuss how the North Miami-based design
team DKOR Interiors helped create a spectacular vacation home in the
Presidential Estates, while Mendez Vela Design Collection worked
closely with educated world travelers to design their Sunny Isles home.
We also look at FENDI Casa’s first line of kitchen designs Ambiente
Cucina in the Design Showcase department, with its three different
styles all fit for unique home designs. Joann Berman creates the most
enticing fashion apparel that is both stylish and eco-friendly in our
Green Design department, where her use of recycled goods make a
strong appearance in her collections. In Behind the Design, we take a
closer look inside the custom made Italian brand Brioni, creating the
ultimate mens suit.
Arno Elias graces our Artworks page with his exciting and brightly colored
mixed media art. You’ll learn how this Paris-born artist went from a
young composer to creating painterly portraits and stunning fashion
photographs.
In the Spotlight department we sat down with Massimo Melchiorre from
Armani/Casa, getting an inside look on what makes him tick along with
what latest products we can expect from the store.
Inside the Entertainment section, we enjoy Salumeria 104, who graciously
served us authentic Italian cuisine of handmade pastas and decadent
desserts inside their fresh baked-bread lined walls of their cozy
Midtown venue.

A Private Tour Inside The Design
District’s Most Exclusive Showrooms

Over the summer, the Miami Design District Marketing Council (MDDMC) partnered
with Design District Magazine to give a small private tour of some of
the most exclusive showrooms that the artsy Design District scene has to
offer. Planning and coordination was also provided by Star Services Events who
helped make all of this happen.
In efforts to bring more foot traffic to the area and to help reach potential buyers,
the MDDMC were able to bring in over 60 guests, residents of luxury condominiums
thanks to the relationship built with the concierges of such buildings who fully
supported the event by inviting their valuable clients. Those residents who attended
were from all over the elite areas of Miami including Icon South Beach, Icon
Brickell, Portofino Towers, 1500 Ocean Drive, 900 Biscayne Bay, Continuum South,
and The W Residences.
Attending residents were picked up at their homes by specific area designated
limo-buses provided by Worldwide Limousine. There were two groups of roughly
over 30 people and were split between South Beach residents and Brickell with
Downtown patrons.
Once the guests arrived at the starting point at the corner of NE 2nd Ave and 40th
Street, they were greeted by their tour guide who then escorted them on an expansive
walking tour of the Design District. Guests weaved in and out of spaces that
included contemporary showrooms, high-end boutiques and fancy art galleries.
The extent of the tour consisted of brief chatter about each space, providing the
guests with proper knowledge of each business they visited. After listening to their
guide, guests then walked around and enjoyed the sights that each area had to
offer. Some businesses welcomed their guests with light refreshments, wine, champagne,
as well as appetizers or desserts to satisfy their appetite.
When the tour came to a close, the guests were then greeted with their designated
limo-buses where they got on to see elaborate gift bags waiting on each seat
for them. Gift bags were filled with literature on the showrooms and galleries along
with small gifts from some of the participating stores including Fendi Casa. ◆

Luxury In Design
Armani/Casa’s Brand Manager Talks Shop

With a quest for a luxurious home suitable for the newly opened
elite Armani/Casa store, Brand Manager, Massimo Melchiorre
is excited about the new Design District location. Allowing the
Armani/Casa showroom to shine within this high-end shopping
destination, top-of-the-line showroom area and fine dining destination,
Melchiorre has acknowledged this is the ideal location. The result so far has
been a positive one, even after only being opened a few months.
Born and raised in Rome, Italy Melchiorre received his bachelor’s degree in
economics from LUISS University, “a private university owned by the Italian
Association of Entrepreneurs.” Growing up he was encouraged by his parents
to see the world, traveling mainly through Europe and finding a particular
love for England. He wasn’t only an avid traveler, but also a film buff. “As
a young man I was influenced by the cinema and spent a lot of time watching
films by some great directors such as Stanley Kubrick, Woody Allen and
Ridley Scott.” He later on worked as an auditor, a certified public accountant
and a consultant and entrepreneur.
Today, his position is one that is quite different for him. “I have always been
driven by challenges, and this is the newest challenge for me,” he says. “I
have moved to a new country and have started a new venture. It is a different
environment and a vibrant, creative sector in one of the liveliest cities in
the world. Being in Miami, I have learned that it is not only important to
understand the Miami environment, but all the other cultures that influence

the make-up of the city. It is important to understand this in order to have a
successful venture here. It is a learning process daily.”
He was thrilled to work with Armani/Casa because he felt that is was the
missing piece within the lifestyle showrooms in the area, and also gives
shoppers what they want without having to travel to another city to find it.
“The completeness of the collections, ranging from beds to tables, with
refined and distinct finishes” along with all the unique “home accessories
are designed with the unmistakable Armani taste. The incomparable Armani
lifestyle is the perfect fit in the burgeoning Miami Design District.”
While the cinema has inspired him creatively, allowing himself to “escape”
inside the plot lines, he turns to his business partner for advice about the
luxury market, who has helped him understand the market in today’s environment.
“As a general rule, I always listen to people I think have better life
experiences, which many times has nothing to do with the age.”
And while the economy has been providing some challenges, he isn’t letting
this spoil his excitement about the future. “The luxury market is one of
the few sectors that survive during the economic downturn,” he says.
“People are willing to pay for the quality a luxury brand provides; we hope
to see that in Miami. We also serve as the gateway for many of the Latin
American countries with a growing economy and we hope to reap some of
the benefits.” ◆

A Crafty Collision
Arno Elias Combines Smooth Sounds with Colorful Mixed Media

Paris born Arno Elias always had a flair for creating. As a
multi-talented musician, painter and photographer he is
enriched with creativity that has brought him much success
throughout his art-filled career.
Elias is known in the music world for his new age tunes that are
referred to Buddha Bar music; a blend of lounge-type sounds that
offer an easy-going feel. His music genius came to him as an early
age when he first started as a famous French singer producing two
solo albums “Le monde inconnu” and “Alchimie.” He continued to
grow as he become known as a successful composer and producer
in the music industry, working with well-known Latin artists such
as Shakira when he was involved in the UNICEF.
While music was a fascination, Elias also had another passion from
childhood: painting. Inspired by the teachings of his grandmother
along with pop artists Rauschenberg, Pollack, and Jasper Johns, his
wild enthusiasm for vibrant color transforms the canvas into a
breathtaking, artistic expression that is both dramatic but still incredibly
sophisticated.

Bold, painterly brush strokes fill his canvases with pops of collage
pieces intertwined creating a mix of different worlds. Faces take a
strong role in his work, showing up in his paintings on a small scale,
but being more of the focal point in his mixed media photographs.
He has an eye for creating an impeccable scene whether it’s with his
paintings, his mixed media work or his digital and high-end fashion
photography.
Elias’s work has been seen all over the globe such as inside the
Rothschild Foundation in Paris, the Keszler Gallery in New York City,
and at the Avant Gallery in Miami during Art Basel. Both his paintings
and photographs have been featured in various art fairs as well such
as Scope Miami, Scope Basel, Art Chicago, San Francisco Art Mrkt,
and Art Paris.
Elias now resides in Miami and is working on a new series of paintings
he plans to exhibit in New York, Montreal, Tel Aviv and Paris.
Currently he also has a collection of mixed media paintings entitled
“Escape” that are at the Markowicz Fine Art Group that includes portraits
of Brigitte Bardot, Alain Delon, and Audrey Hepburn. ◆

FENDI’s Debut Of First Ever Line Of Kitchen Designs

FENDI Casa has been known to produce magnificent highend
home furnishings, and now it continues to revamp the
furniture industry with it’s latest kitchen collection FENDI
Casa Ambiente Cucina. In collaboration with Italian designer
and kitchen manufacturer SCIC, this collection will provide sensational
modern design and high quality durability that will be featured
in three unique styles: Villa Giulia, Villa Livia and Villa Ada.
Exclusively designed for a completely individual space, this collection
is able to give its customers three separate styles to choose
from that will match their own personal taste. Whether a customer is
looking for something dramatic, elegant, or something tucked away,
Ambiente Cucina will be able to provide customers with what they
need in their living space.
As FENDI Casa’s main design attributes of lasting sophistication continue
to show throughout this collection, these three styles help provide
a harmonic rhythm between both practical everyday use along
with impeccable looks that feature only the best in high-quality materials
– some of which have never been used before. Some of the
designs even feature a very rare look of luxury leathers sprawled all
over doors and tops, redefining the structure altogether.
The Villa Giulia is one of the styles offered within the collection and
it allows a sense of unity between all aspects of living and dining.
Instead of allowing the kitchen area to stand on its own within the

home, it’s simply concealed, leaving no real noticeable kitchen
space. The modern design is made with a special curtain system
that conceals the kitchen utilities and can easily be opened with the
sliding of the doors to reveal the oven, working area, and sink. The
Villa Giulia also includes leather-covered shelves and tables with
muted tones that also reveals a stone wall backdrop.
Next in line is the Villa Livia that creates a living space within the
kitchen but also allows a sense of partial seclusion within the other
areas of the home thanks to the use of the glass-partitioned attribute,
if the resident so inclines. Stone tops along with both ebony
wood and dark chocolate gloss lacquer finish also make up this brilliant
design that can be paired with crocodile printed leather and the
official FENDI double-F handle.
Lastly, there is Villa Ada from the Ambiente Cucina collection which
features a true sense of elegance starting with the mother-of-pearl
gloss lacquer that coincides with neutral-toned doors. This design
embraces a panel system to help heighten the entire living space
characterizing it with FENDI’s charm. Leather still plays a very important
role here and can be found wrapped around an open-front compartment
along with the doors of the storage units.
Ambiente Cucina was first seen in April at Salone del Mobile. It will
make its official debut in the United States this September at the
FENDI Casa showroom in Miami’s own Design District. ◆

Eco-Friendly Fashion
I
Renegade, Indie Fashion Designer Joann Berman Crafts Sustainably

t’s obvious that music – especially rock, punk and hip hop, have been
influences in New York fashion designer Joann Berman’s collections
since her start in the 1970s. Since the beginning, sustainability has been
a major factor in her work. Berman is known for her use of recycled and
“upcycles” fabrics found from second-hand stores to create her neon-heavy
and outlandish print designs.
Always pledging to remain sustainable from the beginning of her career to the
end, Berman’s work has been featured in The New York Times, Women’s Wear
Daily and Italian Vogue. An Ecco Domani semi-finalist in 2011, the folks at
Treehugger crowned her “The Reigning Queen of Reconstruction.”
But celebrities have loved her for years, probably because of her eco-conscious
designs. In the 1990s she was designing for giants of the music industry including
the King of Pop Michael Jackson, hip-hop raunch queens Salt ‘n’ Pepa, rapper
Heavy D and hip hop legend and fashion designer P. Diddy. In the 2000s, her work
caught the attention of pop diva Rihanna whose wardrobe is heavily influenced by
those outlandish and flashy fabrics so loved by Berman.
Her success didn’t come easy though. After completing her studies at St. Martins
Art School in London in the early 2000s, she returned to New York in 2006 to
launch her two labels Boiy Krazi and Joann Berman only to see her store burn
down two months after the opening. She moved her shop to Williamsburg and
was there until the 2009 stock market crash forced her to shut down. Once again,
she picked herself back up, this time relocating to Brooklyn at her current Fun
Facxtory Loft.

Here, fashionistas and eco-friendly shoppers flock to check out her clothing and
furniture collections. In her ballet line, Berman reinvents the tutu creating tutu
dresses splashed with black lace, bold colors and buttons to enhance the bust
area. Her vintage furniture line gets sprinkles of neon through fabric coverings on
sofas and throw pillows, while feathers are cleverly used as lampshade décor. And
always the rocker, she pays homage to music covering a vintage French arm chair
with a Mick Jagger likeness. The Stones lead singer makes an appearance on one
of her “God and Angel” line dresses as well.
Her garments are 99% reconstructed; made with donated materials, used garments
from vintage and second hand stores, faux fur, and 1-2% reserved for new
zippers, thread, and other findings. A perfect example of this is her Black Dress, a
piece that although tough to decipher, is impossible to ignore. It’s made of black
and white checks, sequins and small metallic cones, a puffy sleeve for one arm
and sleeveless for the other, to create a rock, punk-inspired piece.
In her Love Burnz Spring 2012 collection, the mixture of patterns and colors is
dizzying which along with the hippy-inspired The Last Flower collection, reflects
Berman’s feminine side.
Oranges, reds, all shades of pink, greens, blues, yellows – these are all in Berman’s
color palette and present throughout her various fashion lines. Her “dare to go
there” attitude is reflective in all her pieces and most likely why celebrities are
attracted to her work. It’s original, combining throwback styles with rock ‘n’
roll/punk attitude colors and patterns. She is an envelope pusher of extremes in
the fashion world with decades of success to show for it. ◆

Couple Their Dream Space

North Miami-based design team at DKOR Interiors, along with Principal
Ivonne Ronderos and lead designer Karina Donadel, recently completed
a home renovation project in North Miami Beach’s luxurious
Presidential Estates in six months and the results are breathtaking.
Accustomed to designing client’s vacation residences here, they were creating a
family’s dream home in which they plan to reside in for 10 to 15 years.
“We knew we were creating something this couple had been working toward for
many, many years,” said Ronderos. “Because of this, we dubbed the project ‘Mrs.
Miami Modern Home.’”
With hundreds of people involved, collaboration of trades was vital to completing
the project between January and July. Knowing each designer at DKOR has a specific
strength and talent, the project was divided in-house among them. Ronderos
said that lighting design, carpentry design, concept development and more were
executed in harmony, with impeccable attention to detail and aesthetics.
“The DKOR designers’ teamwork was the key to our success on this project, carrying
through from start to finish,” Ronderos said. “I particularly loved their keen eye
and unique use of conventional materials, especially those used on walls and ceilings
throughout.”
At 4,500-square-feet, creating the couple’s dream home meant work on virtually
every major room, including bedrooms of the three young children.
“The seven-year-old was excited about his grown up room which fueled the DKOR
team’s design inspiration for his fun bedroom,” said Donadel. Staying true to the
major design element, they distinguished the space by interrupting the continuous
wrap and brought the floor carpet tiles up the walls and stopped the Braille patterned
tiles from allmodern.com at the foot of the bed to encompass the sleeping
area. The blue sphere chair from Inmod.com and blue suspension lamp over the
bed from Kartell give the room its modern feel.
In the bright, lime-lemon yellow bedroom that the two boys’ shared, the challenge
was function -- how to fit two beds, two desks, two nightstands and storage, since
it was immediately evident individual pieces would not work.
“We designed two units, each with necessary multiple functions incorporated as
one,” Donadel said. “Aesthetically, we wanted to unite the two sides with a single
visual element, which became the wall panels and Flor carpet tiles.” Custom-made
green accent pillows complement the two beds while the airy DKOR custom-made
linen ripple fold drapes frame the windows and children’s artwork perfectly.
In the couples’ extended master bedroom, the headboard wall became a large
blank canvas and the design’s jumping point. “We sectioned the wall in three and
combined two materials to break up the large area, while using clean lines to separate
the panels and maintain the consistent crispness of the overall design,” said
Donadel. Continuing the multi-function theme, “the wall unit serves as dresser, desk,
storage and space for the television, and like other carpentry in the room, addresses
the design concept by wrapping elements.”
The soft creams and browns like the fully upholstered off-white leather bed by Jesse
Italy purchased from Arravanti Showroom, and matching custom-made headboard
work with the pinch-pleat drapes that accentuate the bay window. Custom
Carpentry-designed nightstands feature Fine Line bedside lamps with tall and slender
vertical drum shades. A rich, luxurious, long pile, hand-knotted, bamboo silk custom
area rug from Lilypads Creations, Inc. plays well off the wood flooring and the
Casadeus angelo modern style chaise behind the bed is the perfect reading spot.
The bathrooms had to feel airy, incorporate natural textures and remain minimalist.
Like the rest of the home, the bathroom’s functionality specifically addressed the
clients’ needs, from the vanity designs incorporating hamper drawers to the positioning
of the shower controls. Enclosing the toilet area with opaque glass panels
creates airiness, while shower walls surrounded with river rocks creates a unique
showering experience complementing the rain head fixtures. The monochromatic
palette and the self-lit mirror add to the clean design, while the hanging air plants
add a warm and playful touch.
In the living room, the tall ceiling became the focus of the entire home’s design element.
“We established the home’s aesthetic would be ‘warm modern,’ so applying wood on
the ceiling and adjacent wall came naturally in the design process,” Donadel said. This
wrapping concept set the tone for the entire home. Limestone then “added the right
amount of texture and created a clean line of contrast with the wood,” she said.

the perimeter cabinetry, along with the beautiful central pendant, added interest and
playfulness without being childish,” said Donadel.
In the living room, the round pendant Bocci is comprised of 36 cast glass pendants
connected with braided steel coaxial cables to a round white powder coated
canopy. The wood wall with built-in lighting that extends onto the ceiling is Plyboo
Havana Strand Bamboo Flooring while the bottom half of the wall is Vena Grigio
stone also with built-in lighting. Two clean-line tan square-single seat sofas by
Minotti are separated by a glass coffee table adorned with a Michael Dawkins
Home hand-blown clear glass sculpture, a Donna Karan pewter-plated metal oval
tray that lends an organic ocean aura to the room and over scale candles by Jean
Marie Massaud. B&B Italian white metropolitan chairs and Warren Platner-designed
side tables are equally streamlined and the swirl blue abstract piece by artist
Antillion adds color and ties in the ocean theme.
The wrapping element is also featured in the family room through carpentry. “The
clients wanted to relax as a family and also include a bar function for casual entertaining.
So the wall unit holds family-related items and AV components while also
serving as a fully functioning bar hidden behind the pantry-like doors. The chartreuse
pops of color inside the open storage made the wall-to-wall unit feel balanced
and added punch to the otherwise minimal room.
Working jointly on the living and dining rooms solved the problem of the couple
needing to seat 14 people at once, impossible in the existing space.

“We designed the two spaces together, but needed to delineate a separation and
simultaneously keep an open concept. The wood platform grounds the dining room
as its own unit and helps the composition of the two spaces relate as one. The custom
buffet provides the clients with enough storage without overbearing the room.”
The simple chrome leg Minotti dining room table is long enough to accommodate
five Lignet Roset Sala armless dining chairs with chrome sleigh base on each side
lengthwise and two at each end. The chandelier is a Terzani Atlantis Long
Suspension, small, nickel plated.
Donadel describes the chandelier as “seemingly alive, Atlantis shimmering light creates
a vibrant source of energy. Its mesmerizing, organic effect is created by hundreds
of illuminated lengths of draped chain. Like water in the ocean, Atlantis chains
appear liquid, cascading over its polished bands and falling down towards the
abyss before turning back into itself.”
As the central daily gathering space for preparing large meals, the kitchen was
transformed into the home’s single largest space. The room’s natural light was
enhanced with reflective materials for the upper cabinet doors and backsplash.
The walnut base cabinet finish and lavastone cantilevered counter
introduced organic textures needed to make the modern kitchen inviting. A
white Flor oval dining table, green Panton chairs in Chartreus and modern wire
mesh bar stools are ultra-modern.
Also a public area, Donadel said that “the powder room needed to relate to the
living and dining room, hence the wood wrapping, yet we wanted to surprise
people when they stepped in, and the Alex Turco acrylic art piece was the striking
ingredient the room needed.” ◆

Being commissioned to design a Latin American family’s only vacation
home (located here in Miami) would seem like a pressure-filled assignment,
but veteran designers from Mendez Vela Design Collection were
up to the task.
The design team, led by firm principals Osirys Mendez and Sabrina Vela, worked
on the family’s three-bedroom, 3.5 bathroom, 2,600-square-foot unit with ocean,
city and bay views guided by the vision of the couple and their oldest daughter,
out of the three.
“The clients are very well educated world travelers and are multiple homeowners,”
said Vela. “I worked very closely with the mother and the oldest daughter who
both had input into the work we did. And the father chose the chandelier in the
dining room.”
Starting at the top, the team worked to house recess lighting and LED in the
perimeter and window pockets in the living and dining rooms. Then to achieve an
easy yet luxurious look a palette of naturals and whites were used along with lots
of textures. Every wall throughout the unit is covered with different materials giving
many different types of surfaces.
They created custom Walnut wood paneling on the main dining room, living room
and foyer entrance walls, with a contrast of shell wall paper on the opposite wall
by Maya Romanoff. Glass tile by Casa Cielo covers the entire left wall in the foyer
and the floor tiles are a light-colored mosaic. A vintage console table of goat skin
and glass by Uzca circa 1970s adorns the foyer and on it rests a sculpture entitled
“Ethnic Energy” by Tolla Inbar, purchased at Adamar Fine Arts.
Working with a long and narrow living and dining room layout was challenging but
the designers made it work.
“The client wanted to segregate the living room from the dining room area without
losing the dining room’s spectacular ocean view provided by the floor-to-ceil-
ing glass and double sliding door,” Vela said. “They also wanted a fully-functional
bar plus a dining room to accommodate at least 8 to 10 dinner guests comfortably
with a seating area for the same amount of people, as they entertain a lot
while they are in Miami.”
So, the team went to work, creating a bar cabinet from their own custom furniture
collection built with Colombian exotic solid woods by Flor Morada, done in a high
gloss finish as well as fluted doors with silver leafing. “The bar serves its purpose
as a place to make cocktails but also as a divider between the dining room and
living room without interrupting the views while also letting in the natural light. It
creates an open layout,” Vela said.
Because the main door leads directly into the dining room, they had to create a
focal point. They achieved this with a gorgeous chandelier and table from
Carriage House at DCOTA along with a striking 60X80 painting by Carol
Goldberg-Brown entitled “Purple Snow” from Adamar Fine Arts. The chairs and
bar stools in this room are by Judith Norman.
“The painting complements but doesn’t compete with the chandelier and adds
just a touch of color. The owners wanted very neutral tones with only splashes of
color,” she said.
Across in the living room with a view is a streamlined cream-colored sofa by B&B
Italia purchased at Maxalto with uniquely and perfectly crafted arm chairs by
Christopher Guy. The acrylic benches are by Uzca while the coffee table of goat

skin topped with a high-gloss finish is from Mendez Vela’s custom furniture collection.
On top of the table are a pair of Murano vases by Fendi Casa and a head
sculpture by artist Luis Efe Velez entitled “Love and Money.”
Also custom made in Germany from their collection is the cream-colored area rug
with splashes of bright colored sea coral patterns by Oliver Treutlein. The other
pop of color in this room is a tridimensional artwork by William Braemer that adds
a deep blue accent color to the wall. Those are the only two splashes of color in
the living room.
Onto the master bedroom where muted, neutral colors dominate with no hint of
color. The soothing, light-colored wallpaper, soft drapery fabric and custom bedding
fabrics also in earth tones are made using Ralph Lauren and Romo fabrics.
Those make up a custom made bed which is framed by night tables by Judith
Norman, each featuring simple, elegant table lamps by Judith Norman. The vanity
is also from Judith Norman. And because this room features panoramic water
views through floor-to-ceiling windows, recess lighting was created and the ceiling
houses the television which is brought down when in use and retreats back up
when not.
Texture is on every wall in the master bathroom particularly behind the dual his
and her sinks where a custom made piece with glass circles in earth tones adorns
one wall and wallpaper by Romo resides on the other. Missoni towels hang from
holders in front of the sinks and specialty tile and stone by Casa Cielo completes
the look.
In the brightly colored den that leads to the patio is a cream-colored sofa by B&B

and a plush brown Fendi rug underneath the cushiony coffee table. Decorating
the wall are two more of William Braemer’s pieces from Art Fusion Gallerie in the
Design District. The pieces almost look black light-inspired with pops of white and
neon turquoise (to match the pillows). “The two pieces play well with the room’s
overall color scheme,” Vela said. For the guest bedrooms they incorporated shell
tiles purchased at Designer’s Tile in the Design District as their textural element.
And finally outside on the terrace is patio furniture by Inside Out. One side features
chaise chairs and the other a streamlined patio table and matching chairs.
The entire process worked well because as the project progressed, the clients
were shown exact renderings of the room’s end result, including all materials and
textures. This was necessary since every wall within the unit was covered in some
type of material.
The six-month project was a labor of love for the Mendez Vela team, who took a
decorator’s ready unit, let their ideas and creative juices flow and in the end, created
a dream vacation home for their client while developing “an instant friendly
working relationship.” ◆

What are some of the more exotic or

We have a multitude of options and blends

stitching, for some of our exclusive and celebrity

Authentic Italian Cuisine Captured Inside Midtown’s Hidden Gem
F
inding a cozy nook inside a bustling, vibrant city that offers honest, authentic
Italian cuisine can be a rather dueling task, but once you step foot inside
Salumeria 104, you’ll know you’ve found just that. Rather than a large space
promising lots of standard dishes that claim to the real thing, these guys are all
about being authentic and staying true to their Italian roots inside an intimate
venue.
“The idea was to keep it simple all around,” says Chef Angelo Masarin. “In today’s culinary
scene, patrons expect to be challenged, they expect authentic creations with
the freshest ingredients. At Salumeria 104 I cook as if I was in Italy, I strive to get the
best ingredients and prepare simple dishes the way they were meant to be.”
Upon arrival, you’ll notice the quaint room (filling only 1,600 square feet) with pure concrete
floors, hanging salamis and prosciuttos against the white brick walls -- one of
which is designated exclusively for baked breads. A true replica of what you might
see in a small neighborhood local spot in Italy. Small wooden tables, some actually
made out of wine barrels, are spread throughout the intimate dining area paired perfectly
with rustic Italian straw-made chairs with floor-to-ceiling windows showing off
Midtown at its finest. Everything feels authentic from the countryside mural on the
backdrop right up to the short wine glasses used instead of long stemware.
The overall concept is simple. Salumeria 104 is based on a combination of a trattoria
and a small neighborhood shop where customers are able to take home some of
the specialty cured meats and pastas that are used throughout the menu. It’s able to
take the countryside feel of Northern Italy and place it directly inside the up-andcoming
Midtown area that allows for a modern but homey abstraction.
And while the space as a whole is spectacular, the open kitchen (with top of the line
cookware) is an added bonus. Customers are able to watch the chefs diligently prepare
each dish with the manual meat slicer (and the official mascot), as the tasty
aroma fills the air.
The Menu
With true masters in the kitchen, including Chef owner Angelo Masarin from Casa
Tua, Sardinia Enoteca and SOHO Beach House’s Cecconi’s, the food is completely
authentic Italian cuisine. The menu is extensive, especially the daily specials that line

the chalkboard wall in the dining space -- consisting of roughly 10 items that change
daily. The actual menu changes seasonally giving its customers a chance to try new
things and incorporate the latest inventions and local ingredients appropriate for
each season.
The focus is to allow each menu item to really emerge on its own including the meats
that are prepared by a local butcher from Italy and the homemade pastas that are
made fresh in-house.
For starters, it’s hard not to fill up on the various cheeses and cured meats. The formaggi
that consists of parmigiano reggiano, pecorino toscano, and bufala compliments
the palate nicely when paired with the array of meats: prosciutto di Parma, prosciutto
San Daniele, speck, and salame.
There is a large assortment of antipasti as well, ranging from the Farrotto made with
farro, goat cheese and asparagus to the baby octopus salad with potatoes, celery,
and olives that is mixed in a zesty lemon vinaigrette.
The entrees are both for the adventurous eaters and the ones who prefer simplicity.
A mix of various meat dishes consisting of braised Florida rabbit with artichokes,
roasted pork loin bundled in pork belly, and Guinea hen with Venere rice with oyster
mushrooms, all of which pair nicely with a glass of the Chianti Coltibuono Cetamura.
For those looking for pasta dishes, there are plenty to choose from. The house-made
ricotta cheese cavatelli in a fresh tomato sauce is simple but extraordinary and ideal
for vegetarian eaters. The ravioli di prosciutto is out-of-this world delicious with
mounds of ricotta and prosciutto stuffed inside each ravioli and sauteed with oyster
mushrooms that tastes well with the Root: 1 Pinot Noir.
For dessert there are traditional Italian dishes like the tiramisu with espresso soaked
lady fingers, while they also have the salame al cioccolato or chocolate log, along
with assorted biscotti and moist cakes brought in from a local bakery that is ideal
with a glass of Italian prosecco. ◆
