CLUB XVIIINorm Nugent2011GRAND FINAL’SSUMMARYThe Club XV111 season ended on a glorious prespring day when the three matches were played infront of large and appreciative crowds. The gameswere virtually incident free and each providedmany thrilling passages of play.Section 1De La Salle started well but kicked inaccurately,which enabled the more direct Old Xaverians tohold a two point lead at the first change. In thesecond term, the more experienced and fresher OldXaverians took control of the match and with threeunanswered goals, took a twenty one point leadinto the half time interval. In the third quarter, thescoring rate was increased as the teams engagedin a virtual goal for goal battle. De La Salle, througha rearranged forward line gradually overtook theXaverian lead and by three quarter time, the lessfavoured side led by five points. The last quarterprovided a repetition of the third quarter play asthe lead fluctuated with each side scoring twogoals and two behinds. The closeness of the scoresbrought the large crowd to life as each act of playwas greeted vociferously. At the final siren, de LaSalle held their five point margin and thus wontheir first Club XV111 Premiership since 1991.Congratulations go to their players and to DanTehan of Old Xaverians, who was awarded theKing/ Landrigan Medal as he was adjudged thebest player in the Grand Final.Also recognized were; Leading Goal kicker TomKovarik (De La Salle) and the Steve Mason MedalistJames Green from University BlacksNorthThe undefeated Old Carey team added thepremiership to their 2011 achievements whenthey led throughout their game against NorthOld Boys/ St Patrick’s to win by sixty four points.The “Combine” was unable to reproduce its earlierfinal’s form and through the continued pressureexerted by Old Carey, fell further behind as thegame progressed. At half time Carey held a twentytwo point lead and a close contest appeared likely.It was not to be, as Old Carey, who were stung intoaction by the vituperative and stentorian tones ofCoach, Ian England, responded with their strongsecond half effort.Congratulations go to Old Carey who provedthemselves to be Champions of the North Section.Nicholas Colbert from Old Carey was adjudged theBest and Fairest player in the Grand Final.Also recognized at the presentation ceremonywere the competition Best and fairest winner; MarkPietryk and the leading goal kicker Tim. Sheehan,both from the Ivanhoe Club.SouthMazenod won their first Club XV111 SouthPremiership since 2003 when they outplayedHawthorn to win by twenty one points. Hawthornstarted well and quickly took the lead which theyheld at the first change by six points. Mazenodwrested the initiative with a six goal to one burstin the second quarter, which ended with Mazenodin the lead by twenty eight points. The second halfsaw Hawthorn outscore Mazenod but the deficitproved too great as the players tired and scoringbecome more difficult. Mazenod’s winning marginwas twenty one points. Congratulations to theirplayers on their victory. Although not successful atthe end, Hawthorn will be well pleased with theirdebut season when injuries thwarted their final’scampaign.At the presentations following the game, NicholasMeehan from Mazenod was announced as the bestand fairest player in the Grand Final.
