The MHSOB boys wereright on their game with a terrific first quarter (6.3to 1.1) and never looked like losing after holding33 point lead at half time. A 56 point, final scorewas a real morale booster for the winners. Best –Beasley, Dixon, C Tyrell, S Konstanty, Bamert (6),Lee (MHSOB) and Taylor, Dyson, Ritchie, Jenkins,Wells, Knight (Old Ivanhoe).30 Years Ago – 1981Relegation in C Section would prove to be veryinteresting with 4 teams ‘under the spotlight’.St Kevins Old Boys did their chances no harm ofstaying up when they thrashed Old Haileyburians22.15 to 8.7, the result placing Old Haileyburyin one of the four ‘hot spots’. It had been a veryentertaining first quarter with 9.7 to 6.2 SKOBS’way but from then on it was all SKOBS. Best –Corredig, Beale 4, Day, Hannan (3), Callanan,Fanning (SKOBS) and Constable, Corrigan, Meckiff,Noske (4), Thomas, Winkenton (OH).Bottom placed Old Trinity all but ended CountryColleges’ run for the finals with a 11.15 to 4.15victory. The country lads never looked like gettinginto the game and were extremely disappointedwith the poor showing. Best – Carroll, Cumming,O’Shaughnessy (4), Birrell, Jordan, E Borghesi (OT).40 Years Ago – 1971Old Haileybury made sure of a finals’ spot inC Section with a good victory at St Kilda CBC’expense, 14.10 to 7.11. Only 5 points in it at thelast break but Old Haileybury played a greatlast quarter. Best – Gartner, Haughton, Home,McQueen, Regan, Williams (OH) and Kenny,Cameron, Clinch, Sheehan, Dynon (StK CBC).Reservoir Old Boys, withonly 1 loss for the seasonto date, cranked it up evenfurther with a demolition ofAMP Society, 24.28 to 7.8. Best – Martin, Aston, HDevlin, Massey (8), Scott (5), Trevascus (ROB). AMPfailed to acknowledge their triers!Wes Roach finally recorded his 200 th game andthe tough, no-nonsense former captain had givengreat service to Collegians.Martin Bartlett, Powerhouse full forward, kickedhis 100 th goal for the season and was applaudedby home and opposition supporters alike. Martykicked 13.1 in the seniors to bring his tally to 52having kicked 53 majors with the Juniors earlier inthe season.45 Years Ago – 1966MHSOB regained top place in A Section followingCoburg’s sensational defeat by Old Paradians.Coburg led Parade by 26 points at half timebut a much more determined Paradians outfitblanketed the opposition in the second halfand won by 10 points, Coburg’s only score afterhalf time was a goal on the siren. Best – Proctor,Danaher, Mansfield (OP) and McIntosh, Scanlon,Dumayne (Coburg).Lowest scoring team for the round was ANZ Bankwith only 2.1 against OGG’s 14.14 in D Section.60 Years Ago – 1951In C Section, Murrumbeena defeated Balwyn 10.13to 8.6 and Frankie Price handled the ball easily inthe wet for Murrumbeena to be announced asclearly their best. Bill Morley and Fred Fergusonwere also terrific players for the winners. Balwynadmitted they would have to play much better inthe remaining few weeks to grab, hold of fourthplace, their only option at that stage. Frank Evansand Alan White were clearly best for Balwyn.Veteran Field Umpire, Jim Walsh, announced hisretirement and the former leading goal kickerfor the Brighton VFA Club in days gone by, hadbeen associated with football before many of thecurrent players of the day had been born.
